Harper Visits Wigtownshire Women’s Aid

South of Scotland MSP Emma Harper visited Wigtownshire Women’s Aid in Stranraer last Friday to learn more about services the charity provides for women who experience domestic abuse.

Ms Harper spoke with Deputy Co-Ordinator Fiona Gaffney and her team about their experiences supporting women, and the specific challenges they face in doing so.

Ms Harper commented:

“It was great to visit Wigtownshire Women’s Aid and meet the tremendous staff who work so hard to support women.
“The charity has operated in Stranraer for thirty years now and has grown from a handful of volunteers to 21 paid staff.
“The demand for WWA’s services has grown considerably over the years, and we can only hope that thus is due to women becoming more aware of these services – and of their right not to endure abuse.
“It was useful for me to hear more about the specific services WWA offers – their impressive team includes crisis and refuge outreach workers and children and young person’s workers.
“It’s great to have established contact with Wigtownshire Women’s Aid, and assure them that I will support their important work in any way I can going forward.”
