In March 2017 a frenzy of excitement erupted in a quite corner of the Rhins of Galloway when Hollywood stars and film crews arrived at Scotland’s most southerly point to start filming for a new movie called ‘Keepers’ Staring Scottish heartthrobs Gerard Butler and Peter Mullan.
Movies require lots of props and sets to be organised and built and made, but one prop that you will be able to see in the movie has sat at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse exhibition for quite a few years now. It is the Lighthouse Keepers Cap that Paisley Born actor ‘Gerard Butler’ wears in several scenes of the film.
Alison Smith from the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse Trust told DGWGO Entertainment news “The cap belonged to Jimmy Fyffe who worked for Northern Lighthouse Board. He was an attendant at the Mull of Galloway from 1988 to 2007.
The ‘Keepers’ wardrobe department asked if they could borrow the cap for the duration of the filming. The cap was used for the film and returned to the exhibition last week together with a thank you card.
Gerard Butler who plays the role of James Ducat can be seen wearing the cap in various scenes throughout the film.”
Filming of the movie has now finished and all is back to normal in the Rhins of Galloway. But the cap is now on display in the exhibition at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse if you would like to see it, plus there will be more props from the movie on display very soon.
On leaving the Mull of Galloway Gerard Butler wrote in the guest book at the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse:“What a breath-taking location to spend some time in. Warm and welcoming and dangerous and foreboding at the same time. Thanks for the hospitality and allowing us in to tell our story. I get to be a keeper at one of the most beautiful locations there is”.
The Exhibition is open daily from 10am to 4pm.
