Dumfries and Annan Museums have organised free fun family activities for the St Andrews Day school break .
The current exhibition at Dumfries Museum is called “Hosts and Champions” and is all about Scotland and the Commonwealth Games. Alongside the exhibition there are a variety of gallery activities including a champions’ gallery trail, a challenge to design a new Commonwealth Games mascot, sporty quizzes and colouring sheets.
Saturday 28 November is “Games Day” at Dumfries Museum. Families can drop in and try out a variety of games from throughout the ages including a range of board games, Victorian toys and modern day Kurling. The activities will be available 10am – 12 noon and 2 – 4pm.
Hosts and Champions: Scotland and the Commonwealth games is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 1pm and 2 – 5pm until 12 December. This exhibition celebrates over 80 years of participation and achievement by Scotland in the Commonwealth Games from its origin as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930, through to Glasgow 2014. Drawn from the Commonwealth Games Scotland Archive held by the University of Stirling, the exhibition displays a selection of new footage, photographs, designs, clothing, papers and artefacts which evoke the rich story of Scotland’s involvement in the Games, including as hosts in 1970, 1986 and 2014.
Monday 30 November sees Zoolab’s Megabeasts returning to Annan Museum for one day only. A two metre boa constrictor, bosc monitor lizards, the world’s largest! tarantula and more. Sessions start at 10am, 11am, 12noon, 2pm and 3pm. As numbers are restricted for each session it is strongly advised that you book a place in advance by telephoning 01387 253374.
