After 3 years of sell out stage shows, Scotland’s top professional showband Spatz & Co returns to Theatre Royal Dumfries with their new 2019 Roadshow
‘One Night in Las Vegas’
As the title suggests, the show offers a taste of ‘the entertainment capital in the world’, Las Vegas. Although the sheer scale of glitz, glamour, neon, themed hotels and Casino revelry may be hard to replicate, what can be celebrated in more modest style is some of the most iconic music to have been performed by some of the greatest singers, musicians and entertainers who have graced the stages of those world famous Vegas venues. Venues, such as Caesars Palace, The Sands, The Flamingo, Casino Royale, The Mandarin Oriental, and more.
Music made famous by the Big Bands of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, hit songs by Frank Sinatra and The Rat Pack, the trailblazing recordings of Elvis, the compositions of Burt Bacharach for Dionne Warwick, the singer song-writing of Barry Manilow, Chuck Berry, Paul Simon, Eric Clapton, and others.
From foot-tapping swing from the American Songbook, to Blues, Soul and Reggae; from Latin rhythms and Gospel to Jazz, Funk and Pop hits – there’s something in the programme for most tastes. As vocalist and Spatz bandleader, Roy Mac sums up “A Spatz show comprises 3 key ingredients – great music, a wide variety of musical genres and top quality musicianship. Add to that some tasteful fun and good humour, and the result, we are told, is an uplifting musical experience with a genuine feel good factor. Our audiences always seem to leave smiling.”
Few bands these days can serve up such a mix and variety of musical genres with such showmanship. Part of the fun on the night is the fact that the audience never knows what might come next – all performed with an engaging informality, in typical Spatz showband style, and always with a clever musical twist.
The ever more popular 9-piece band is unique in the UK as it comprises 9 of Scotland’s finest musicians, each one a bandleader, each one a multi-instrumentalist, each one a solo performer in his own right. Collectively, with over 200 years of performing experience under their belts, they only come together for theatre and stage shows.
Given the specialist knowledge and experience of every musician, the quality of musical performance evident on stage has contributed to a growing and much respected reputation.
In an age when theatre tends to be dominated by tribute acts, the freedom and musical self expression of Spatz is becoming recognised as what makes their shows so different and so special.
‘One Night in Las Vegas’ has been over a year in the making and is now touring theatres throughout Scotland. It arrives at the Theatre Royal Dumfries on Saturday 18th May.
