Something special is happening at the Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries on Sunday 25th March… Sidcup girl ‘Lucy-May’ is playing live by invitation from local radio presenter and business man Rab Smith.
Lucy-May is a singer/songwriter from Sidcup, Kent. Brought up on 60’s Motown music you can definitely hear this in her soulful vocal infused with a retro yet new country vibe. Her unique style and edgy look alongside her distinct beehive hairstyle sets her aside from anyone else out there. Lucy-May is an independent artist and totally self funded, holding down several jobs to make money for her music.
Lucy has been invited to visit Dumfries and Galloway and play a gig here by Rab Smith of Domino Entertainments. Rab first heard Lucy-May sing on 16th May 2014 when she was the opening performer for Michael Bolton at The Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow (she also opened for Michael at The Royal Albert Hall on the same tour…which she says is her biggest highlight so far!)
Rab told DGWGO “My wife Louise and I and some friends from the town went to the Michael Bolton gig in Glasgow 2014 and we were blown away by Lucy-May and have seen her perform live several times since then, in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle.“
Rab continued “It was when we saw her most recently, in Glasgow in November 2017 perform to a very small audience, in a very small venue that we said to Lucy that if she would put Dumfries on her map, we would arrange a venue and an intimate and personal audience of about 100 real & live music supporters… and she took us up on that suggestion!”
Lucy released her debut single ‘Paper Heart’ in 2013, which made the Radio 2 B list and is a fine introduction to Lucy and her raw talent. She released her debut album “Whirlwind” in 2015 and says “it was pretty surreal seeing my album in HMV on the recommended shelf…I was so proud.” The Sidcup lass has just released her second album “Little by Little” and again it made the “recommended” shelf in HMV as well as Domino this time! Her first and second singles from the new album “Counting the Days” and “Little by Little” have both made waves across the UK and USA on lots of regional radio stations.
Continuously gigging across the UK, and even making waves Stateside, she has opened for some incredible artists such as the legendary Michael Bolton, Robben Ford, Striking Matches, Kristian Bush of Sugarland, Larkin Poe, Ashley Monroe and Gabrielle.
Lucy has been highly praised by the likes of Terry Wogan, Graham Norton, Steve Wright, Simon Mayo and Janice Long to name a few… she has also been interviewed by Jo Whiley, Bob Harris and Baylean Leonard… as well as Rab himself!
It is only a matter of time until Lucy-May becomes a well known name and this gig is the opportunity for Dumfries & Galloway to say “she played here!”
