Everyone is invited to come along and join with the people of Moffat singing a whole range of amazing Scottish songs in celebration of our local and national cultural heritage at an event to be held on ST ANDREW’S DAY, 7pm on Friday 24th November at Moffat Town Hall. With a delicious supper, other trad. music and a fab ceilidh disco all thrown in!
One of the organisers said “For several of the youngsters this will be their very first experience of singing in community – with others of all ages singing together in harmony all around them. We who grew up experiencing communal singing as a matter of course tend to forget just how uplifting, nurturing, and essential to the wellbeing of the human spirit is this experience of singing together. We are so incredibly blessed to be living here in Scotland with such a rich heritage of beautiful poetry and song.
All song lyrics will be provided for everyone! A feast for all the senses – bring your own bottle, and supper will be served in the shape of Scottch pies, full of mutton from sheep born and bred two miles from Moffat, carefully crafted by hand and served with tatties and veg. There is also a vegetarian quiche option as well, and cake for afters.”
They Continued “Rousing and beautiful songs from the Hebrides, deeply moving melodies and lyrics whose origins go back way into the mists of Scottish history and legend (many with local connections…Annie Laurie, Craigieburn Wood, Ca’ the Yowes…), some hilarious and philosophical Glaswegian children’s songs, the famous Wee Kirkcudbright Centipede, songs based on well-known Scottish and Highland country dance tunes and of course a delve into the extraordinary artistic output of Robert Burns.
Ever conscious of the fact that Burns was walking the streets and hillsides of 18th century Moffat at the exact same time that Mozart was roaming the streets and hillsides of Salzburg, we have created our own fantasy piece “Mozart in Moffat” – now popularly known as the Moffat Toffee Song!”
