Actor and playwright Luke Norris, who plays Dr Dwight Enys in the popular BBC TV series Poldark, brings his brand new drama to the region as part of Arts Live’s exciting autumn programme.
Paines Plough theatre company will perform Luke’s third critically-acclaimed play “Growth” to audiences in Moniaive and Dumfries. This is a very funny look at a young man dealing with an overwhelming problem in a “lad” culture where men are reluctant to seek help when it is needed. Growth is a deeply moving but genuinely hilarious drama with some astounding one-liners and the performance is confidently delivered by a fearless and excellent ensemble.
The show opened at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2016 and had the audience in fits of laughter from start to finish. The critical response to the play was overwhelming with Growth picking up plenty of stars and a prestigious Fringe First Award.
Paines Plough theatre company are no strangers to Dumfries and Galloway. Their up-beat drama Every Brilliant Thing was well received when it appeared this year at the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival and showcased the quality of theatre that critics have come to expect from this award-winning company.
Growth comes to Glencairn Memorial Institute, Moniaive, on Tuesday, 26 September, and to the Theatre Royal Studio, Dumfries, on Wednesday 27 September. Closed caption tablets for the hard of hearing are available for the Dumfries performance.
Nigerian actor Tayo Aluko has received high critical acclaim for his “triumphant” artistry in his role of Britain’s first black judge, told in drama and song. Just an Ordinary Lawyer follows the trials of legal pioneer Tunji Sowande as he quietly breaks through multiple barriers to reach the apex of his career in 1978 as an English Crown Court judge. A fine concert singer and keen cricket lover, he muses on international politics and history as they affect the Black world from Africa to the USA and Britain, from the point of view of one who would rather watch sports and spread love and peace through the medium of song.
Just an Ordinary Lawyer begins its mini tour of the region on Friday, 22 September, at Thomas Tosh, Thornhill. The company then moves to Dalbeattie’s Birchvale Theatre on Saturday, 23 September before finishing with two dates at the Swallow Theatre, Whithorn, on Sunday and Monday, 24 and 25 September. All shows begin at 7.30pm.
