WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre will be holding another round of the Scottish Puddle Jumping Championships this Feburary.
The event will be held over three days,18th until the 20th of February 2019, from 12.00 noon until 2.00pm, A spokes person from WWT Caerlaverock said “Come and show us your puddle jumping skills at the Scottish Puddle Jumping Championships at WWT Caerlaverock Wetland Centre. We will be awarding points for height of spash, style and enthusiasm!”
WWT Caerlaverock was set up in 1971 to provide safe wintering grounds for the Svalbard breeding population of barnacle geese, of which there were then only 300 birds. Today over 40,000 barnacle geese visit the Solway Firth each winter, of which 8-10,000 can be seen daily at WWT Caerlaverock. Whooper swans also spend the winter on the reserve and we have commentated wild swan feeds daily, October to March. Thousands of waders such as knot, dunlin and golden plover come in close on the high tide, and wintering ducks can be seen from the hides, including wigeon, teal, shelduck and gadwall.
In summer the ospreys return from Africa and the wildflower meadow is alive with buzzing bees, butterflies and dragonflies, as well as swallows and house martins who nest in and around our hides!
