Graham Smith Is this months DGWGO Featured Author , Graham told DGWGO – Im a writer who has lived in Dumfries and Galloway since the age of five. I live near Gretna with my wife of twelve years and our ten year-old son. By day I manage one of the region’s most popular wedding venues, yet evenings see me write hard-hitting crime fiction.
I’ve been a fan of crime fiction since receiving a Famous Five book at the age of eight and after becoming a reviewer for the well-respected review site www.crimesquad.com I have also been lucky enough to meet and interview famous authors such as Harlan Coben, David Baldacci, Lee Child, Val McDermid and Peter James. My progression to writing in 2010 was a natural one after learning so much as a reader and reviewer.
After a few terrible drafts littered with amateurish mistakes, I managed to write a book good enough secure a publishing contract with Caffeine Nights for my debut novel. Snatched from Home sees middle-class parents turn to crime to pay a ransom for the safe return of their children. At the time of writing, the sequel is with the publisher and I am working on creating a new series set in the USA.
My writing is very important to me and while it is fantastic to see my book stocked on shelves, I would still be writing even if nobody was reading. I am lucky enough to have a vivid imagination and overactive brain. At any one time, I can be thinking about plots for two novels and several short stories.
As part of my professional life, I became involved with Destination Dumfries & Galloway as I am a fervent advocate for bringing more tourists to the region. Dumfries and Galloway is Scotland’s forgotten corner and there is stunning scenery, friendly welcomes and activities for all the family available throughout the region. The region also has a burgeoning arts scene which I’m immensely proud to be a part of.
My down time is spent with my wife and son, socialising with friends or reading and writing.
