Launch of Flash Fiction Short Story Competition for Young Writers

Young writers across Dumfries and Galloway are being encouraged to showcase their creativity in a Flash Fiction short story competition. This free-to-enter competition is part of the annual Kirkcudbright Book Week, taking place from 3 to 9 March 2025. The event is organised by the Kirkcudbright Book Week Society and Dumfries and Galloway Council, with support from Kirkcudbright Library on Daar Road.

Flash Fiction stories feature a beginning, middle, and end, but are significantly shorter than traditional stories. Writers are free to choose any theme for their entries. The competition is divided into the following categories:

9-10 years old: Maximum 500 words

11-12 years old: Maximum 500 words

13-15 years old: Maximum 650 words

The winners will be announced at an event on Thursday, 6 March, at 7pm, held at Kirkcudbright Library. This event will mark the conclusion of activities organised for young writers and readers as part of Kirkcudbright Book Week and will coincide with celebrations for World Book Day.
