Wigtown Book Festival Organises World Book Day Events for 400 Classes Across the Region

Wigtown Festival Company is hosting three events for schools for this week’s World Book Day on 6 March.

Up to 40 children from Wigtown and Kirkcowan Primary School will take part in person, with over 400 more classes round the region signed up for live streaming.

The events will let children meet author Mike Nicholson who is launching his brand new picture book My Granny Went to Scotland.

Mike will be sharing his Museum Mystery Squad series, with tales ranging from moving mammoths to vanishing vikings; and the mystery adventure Catscape for older children.

Like last year town residents will also be encouraged to dress up as their favourite character from a book.

Anne Barclay, Wigtown Festival Company Operational Director, said: “One of our most important missions is to encourage a love of reading for leisure among young people.
“Evidence shows that this is something which hugely boosts people’s chances of leading a fulfilled and successful life.
“Reading attainment levels in Dumfries and Galloway are lower than in many other parts of the country and we are working with schools to boost them.
“Events like this can really help by making reading fun.”

The schools activities are supported by Developing the Young Worksforce.

  • This year’s Wigtown Book Festival takes place from 26 September – 5 October.
