D&G Camping Caper now fundraising on Kickstarter for publication
Madcap camping caper needs a push up the fund-raising hill
Aunty is going on a madcap camping caper with a crazy crew of critters and kids in a campervan. BUT she needs a little help from her friends before she can go anywhere!
Renita Boyle and Mike Abel (Wigtown author/illustrator duo) have launched a Kickstart campaign to raise funds for the publication of their first indie picture book- Honk! Honk! Rattle! Rattle! Set in D & G with universal appeal, it can be read or sung and will be 36 pages full of colour and fun for 5-8’s and everyone. Should funding for the book be successful, a Honk! Rattle! Roadshow! will also roll out to five libraries within Dumfries and Galloway. Indeed, it is hoped that the book will be released just in time for World Book day (March), and available widely for Easter, the festival season and in plenty of time for Christmas 2016.
There are a variety of pledge levels and perks given as a thank you for supporting the project. However, it is all or nothing. If the full sum is not pledged by the January 6th deadline, none of it will be given. Popular pledges thus far have been £15 and £20 (both of which will get you a signed copy of the book and extras) and £35 (which will also allow you to get a name of your choice printed on the dedication page £50 for biz logo).

‘Honk! Honk! Rattle! Rattle! has been a collaborative project from the very beginning ~ and not just between Mike and I’. Says Renita. ‘The story is the result of a poetry challenge in which folks (many from D & G) gave me subjects to write about. My friend, Caroline asked for a poem about a campervan and I asked everyone what they would like me to put in the said campervan. Hence, I included everything I could in the poem, added an old silly song and drew a rough sketch of the camper. Thus Honk! Honk! Rattle! Rattle! was born. (You can see the original poems here.)
‘When Renita asked me to draw her crazy campervan, I had no idea where it would lead!’ Says Mike. ‘Once we started, we just couldn’t stop! It turns out that we are the perfect combination of chaos and quirk. It has been hard work and a lot of fun to develop the characters and capture the feel of our region in the process.’
The project also comes at the end of a very special year for Renita who served as Reader in Residence for Dumfries and Galloway Libraries 2014/15, a post which was sponsored by the Scottish Book Trust.
