If you can cook up a storm in the kitchen or have aspirations of being Mary Berry, then the Buccleuch Bake Off at this year’s Galloway Country Fair is the place to be.
Baking enthusiasts will be in heaven as the Buccleuch Bake Off makes a welcome return to this year’s Fair, taking place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August, following the debut of this Home Baking Competition and Decorative Cupcake Competition last year.
On Saturday 20, the professionals will take the heat as local hospitality providers compete to create the most show-stopping cake. The Duke of Buccleuch’s very own cook, Betty Cook, will take on the role normally reserved for Mary Berry, judging the winner of the prestigious ‘Star Baker’ trophy.
Those who wish to channel their inner Paul Hollywood can show off their baking prowess in the Fair’s Home Baking Competition, with a range of prizes up for grabs. Entries will be accepted for Victoria Sponge, Raspberry Jam, Cheese Scone and Tablet categories, with judging by Irela Hamilton and Elizabeth McMillan from the Scottish Women’s Institute at 1pm on Sunday 21. All entries must be at the Bake Off tent by 12.45pm with the winning baking masterpieces being crowned at 3.30pm.
Young culinary wizards will also have the chance to shine thanks to the Fair’s Junior Competition – with a 2017 family season pass for Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate up for grabs. Judging will take place at 1pm on Sunday 21. Categories include decorated round biscuits and Poppy cupcakes – in celebration of our charity partners, Poppyscotland.
All bakers who would like to enter the various categories must register their interest online in advance of the Fair. Deadline for entries is Wednesday 10 August.
Anna Fergusson, Visitor Services Centre Manager at Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate, said: “This is a great opportunity for people who want to show off their skills in the kitchen. This year we have our very own dedicated bake-off tent at the Fair so will be a real celebration of baking.
“There are plenty of talented bakers in the local area and beyond so we’re hoping to receive a number of entries for our competitions. And there will be no end of tasty produce on offer for those who would rather try and buy.
“We still have a number of spots available for our Bake Off competition in all categories so would urge anyone interested to visit our website, before the closing date of Wednesday 10th August, and fill out the entry form. Entry is free!”
