Gretna Green To Launch Its First Beer With ‘Anvil Ale’ Collaboration

  •   World-famous destination, Gretna Green launches its own beer in collaboration with Langholm-based Borderlands Brewery
  • Quality beer is a light and refreshing ale with fruity and spice notes

Gretna Green, the award-winning wedding, hospitality, retail and experience destination, located at the ‘Gateway to Scotland’ in Dumfries & Galloway has launched its own beer to celebrate the iconic status and heritage of the world-famous destination.

Aptly named the ‘Anvil Ale’ in honour of the famous blacksmiths’ wedding anvil, the bottled beer has been produced by local family-brewery, Borderlands Brewery, based in nearby Langholm in Dumfries & Galloway.

The exciting new beer has been inspired by Gretna Green and its heritage – a light and refreshing, quality beer designed with passion at its heart.

The Anvil Ale is a full-bodied pale ale, brewed using malted barley and hops combined for a pale ale with rustic citrus notes and a long clean finish. The beers are hand crafted from brewing to bottling using premium malts, hops, water and yeast, producing an ale with a delicate balance of fruit and spice. The beer is a true fusion of Scottish heritage, tying a knot between the romantic story of Gretna Green and the brewing history of Langholm, aptly made with water from the Black Esk river which flows through the heart of Eskdale.

The new and exclusive 500ml bottled beers are available to buy on-site at Gretna Green inside the Famous Blacksmiths Gretna Green Experience Gift Shop, the 1754 shop, the FoodHall and Food Court. The beer can also be enjoyed in the bars at both 4-star Gretna Green hotels – Gretna Hall and Smiths at Gretna Green – and bought online at the Gretna Green website – www.gretnagreen.com.

Founder of Borderlands Brewery, Stuart Campbell, said:
“We wanted to create a beer that is as steeped in history and passion as Gretna Green itself. We’ve poured our heart and soul into creating a beautiful brew that does this perfectly – what we’ve created is light, refreshing and, we hope like Gretna Green, will stand the test of time for many years to come,”

Isabel Rhodes, Chief Executive at Gretna Green, said: “We are very excited to launch our very own beer after many months of hard work behind the scenes by the team. We’re proud to be working with a fellow local business in Dumfries and Galloway. The wonderful Borderlands Brewery was the perfect partner for us – steeped in history and embedded in the community they share many of our values. With blacksmithing and brewing both ancient traditions, we’re delighted to be bringing the two together and launching a fresh new beer for today’s ale lover right at the gateway to Scotland. Here’s raising a glass to that!”
