South of Scotland MSP Emma Harper has condemned thieves who stole more than 2’000 oysters from the shoreline near Stranraer.
The incident happened ahead of the first Stranraer Oyster Festival which will take place between the 15th – the 17th of September.
The theft took place between 18 and 20 August when seven bags were taken after being collected by the Loch Ryan Oyster Company.
Ms Harper said:
“I am saddened to hear the news of this theft just over two weeks before the inaugural Starnraer Oyster Festival.
“This will be a cruel blow to Festival organisers who have been working extremely hard to make this event a success.
“I would urge the public and businesses to be vigilant, and to contact the police if they become aware of anyone trying to sell on a large quantity of oysters.
The local MSP added:
“I am reassured to hear that organisers still have sufficient supplies. The Oyster Festival is a great town revival event which celebrates the famous Loch Ryan Oysters, as well as other local produce.
“Loch Ryan Oysters are sent around the world but the connection with Stranraer is not always recognised. The festival provides the opportunity to make this connection, increase visitor numbers to the town and support the local economy.
“I hope that local residents, and folk visiting the area, will come out and support this wonderful event.”
