Kirkcudbright Food Festival takes place this weekend from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd October, serving up a menu of delicious food and drink events, activities, experiences and entertainment. The weekend festival is designed to showcase and celebrate the local produce of south west Scotland and it’s proving popular, with several events already selling out!
Famous as Scotland’s Artists Town, Kirkcudbright is fast becoming a destination for quality local produce with one of the fastest growing farmers’ markets in Scotland taking place in the picture perfect harbour town each month. The festival, which is organised and hosted by Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities, combines fun food challenges with educational activities for children, celebrity guest chefs and a 50 stall strong producers market. There will be street food, live music, cookery schools, competitions and special dining events. There’s even a complementary Gin Festival running throughout the festival showcasing 140 gins!
Organiser Niomi Brough said this year’s festival is about learning about food as well as celebrating and enjoying it.
“My aim for the food festival this year is to provide, not just great food producers and talks, but to ensure that there are learning experiences; that people can come away from our festival having discovered something new.
“It’s all too easy, in a region so steeped in phenomenal food and agriculture, to forget that we are surrounded by hard working primary producers that work tirelessly to produce internationally recognised, award-winning foods. Kirkcudbright Food Festival is an opportunity for these people to tell us where their amazing products come from, and it’s an opportunity for us to learn how to use it and make the most of it. It’s not just about supporting local, there is more to eating good quality local food than that.
“This year we have worked hard to create a tasty programme of events that offers lots to enjoy for everyone. We have two headline chefs who are hosting events on the Saturday and Sunday, we have more than 40 producers spread over 50 stalls, a dedicated interactive learning marquee for children, hands-on cook school, Scottish heritage events, live bands and an atmospheric evening market.”
Saturday’s special guest is Rosie Dummer AKA Rosie Cake-Diva who is a social media star cake maker. On Sunday Scottish spice king Tony Singh will be bringing his flair for flavour and his passion for local produce to Kirkcudbright Food Festival with a mouth watering menu of dishes featuring local produce.
Other activities include a 7 course local dining experience, in-depth farm tours and tastings, fish filleting demonstrations, gin tasting events, cake competitions and workshops including a new event titled The Great D&G Cake Off, lunchbox workshops, nutritionist clinics, sausage eating challenges and chef demonstrations.
