It was the end of the Season for the Dumfries Accordion and Fiddle Club at The Crichton Golf Club in Dumfries on Tuesday 1st April with Edinburgh’s Iain McPhail and his SDB as Guest Artistes.
Around, 100 listening enthusiasts, supporters, visiting, and local supporting players alike, packed the Crichton Golf Club for a great night and fitting end to a successful season for the Dumfries Club.
Iain and the band, Brian Griffin from Lockerbie on harmony accordion, Izzy Hodgson, Preston Pans on piano and Nicky McMichan from Moffat playing drums, gave us two outstanding guest spots with a wide variety of tunes, time signatures, McPhail compositions and much more.
Just ‘the best’ with every set of tunes getting the McPhail treatment and great arrangements.
The smiles on the faces, the tapping of the feet, the rapturous applause, showed that the large crowd enjoyed every note played.
In a programme of music, that had many highlights, the Gaelic Waltz selection (for me!) was pure brilliance, as was everything else, but this set was somehow ‘extra special’
Thanks Iain, Brian, Izzy, and Nicky for a great night.
Haste ye back!!!
During the evening, many local players enjoyed a tune, however, time constraints meant just as many didn’t this time round.
Players playing on the night were:
On accordion, John Douglas, Fred Prise, Tom Killearn, Stephen McWhan, Brian Maxwell, Frank Morrison, Robin Waitt, John Waugh, and Janet Graham. Madeline Maxwell played whistle, William McRobert accompanied on piano with drumming shared between, Rob Dorrance, Billy Porter, and Ian McRobert.
Matthew Murray, Newby Park, Barbara Fisher, Gavin Foster, Ian Woods, William Little and John Cowan were the unfortunate players who didn’t get a tune this time round.
The Club appreciate the support of all the local, and visiting supporting players and it’s always a disappointment when we have to ask some to miss their turn, however, we remember the names and they are first on the list for the next time.
John Caskie thanked everyone for their support over the season, the staff at The Crichton for their help and cooperation each month, and to all who have donated raffle prizes and assisted in the running of the Club over the season since last September.
John reminded all that the Dumfries Accordion and Fiddle Club celebrates 60 years this year 2025, the committee hope to arrange special celebrations before the end of the year and during the start of next season in September.
