Rock, theatre, folk, comedy and much more as Europe’s biggest winter fringe grows to give nine great days in Dumfries
From The Undertones, Hue and Cry and Skerryvore to the monster devilry of Red Bastard – Big Burns Supper 2015 will be a riot of entertainment wrapped round the Bard’s birthday.
Next year the festival grows from three days to nine – 23-31 January – and the organisers have just unveiled the first of their headline acts – more announcements will follow.
Big Burns Supper 2015 – part of Scotland’s Winter Festivals (a programme of events managed by EventScotland on behalf of the Scottish Government), will also welcome fabulous music from Hue & Cry, The Vaselines and Skerryvore plus comedy from Craig Hill.
The distinctive Scottish flavour of BBS will be complimented by a strong international line up, extending from music to physical theatre there will be, Living Room with Manu Delago to Red Bastard from the USA.
Once again the Spiegeltent – a fabulous mirrored tent – will be one of the main venues and among those performing there will be Angela Darcy in Peter Arnott and Corra Bisset’s celebrated show Janis Joplin: Full Tilt.
Graham Main, Festival Director, said: “We are taking Big Burns Supper to a whole new level in 2015 with nine days of entertainment – 100 shows and around 50 venues – plus a huge Burns Night Carnival through
the streets of Dumfries.
“The headline acts we are announcing today show just how diverse the festival is becoming with music, performance and comedy from celebrated Scottish and international acts.
“As ever our programme reflects the spirit of Rabbie Burns and his zest for life and for arts and entertainments of just about every kind.”
Undertones singer Paul McLoone said: “The band are looking forward to the show at the Big Burns Supper in January. The festival has become quite a prestigious and admired event on the international arts calendar. The Speigeltent is a magical venue, we’ll have to put on an even better show than usual to keep the audience focused on the stage and not the beautiful venue that will surround them.”
Big Burns Supper is designed to offer audiences a mix of highly regarded and well-known performers with emerging artists and shows created by the Dumfries and Galloway community.
It also has proven appeal to audiences of all tastes and ages – attracting visitors from across Scotland and increasingly from elsewhere in the UK and overseas.
Next year Big Burns Supper will celebrate the Year of Food and Drink Scotland 2015 and the UNESCO Year of Light through the Burns Night Carnival which is supported by Holywood Trust and Awards for All.
Year of Food and Drink Scotland will build on the momentum generated by Homecoming Scotland 2014 with a series of exciting events and activities celebrating Scotland’s outstanding natural larder.
The festival is made possible by support from many organisations including Creative Scotland, 8020 and Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Beacon Event Programme and is part of Scotland’s Winter Festivals, a programme of events managed by EventScotland on behalf of the Scottish Government.
