The organisers of Galloway’s own international world/roots music festival, Knockengorroch World Ceilidh, are holding their annual Winter Warmer event at The Venue in Dumfries this month.
Usually held in January, this year’s date has moved to Friday 19th February
World Ceilidh organiser Liz Holmes said ‘with spring just round the corner, here’s a chance to get a taste of May’s World Ceilidh in a club environment with some of Knockengorroch’s favourite acts: legendary dub pioneer Zion Train’s Neil Perch, positive vibes from Glasgow’s up and coming Samson Sounds, top sounds from DJ collective Wobbly Social Club, local troubadours the Mind Sweepers and folky sessions featuring Galloway’s finest.
For the many followers of Dub, Neil Perch and Zion Train need no introduction. Formed in the late 80’s, with an impressive and award winning back catalogue, they have been have been cited as primary influences on the minimal techno and minimal dub genres.
The Winter Warmer is delighted to feature a strong contingent of artists from Dumfries & Galloway: Samson Sounds are led by Anders Samson – who lives and works in Galloway. This 4 piece incorporate African highlife and blues, to Kwaito and steppas with a heavyweight dub bass. With the launch of their new album at the end of February, and several past and future London performances, the grooves played are tight, solid and never fail to bring warm happy vibes.
A band we predict will be going places, The Mind Sweepers, hail from Dumfries and Newton Stewart. Their self-penned music is eclectic and covers nu folk to rockabilly.
A traditional sessions set will kick off the music with uillean pipes and guitar, also performed by local Galloway artists.
Greenery, decor and colourful installations will turn the venue into a winter wonderland, whilst the lineup is guaranteed to knock the socks off any winter blues!
