Legends of Swing, Coming To Theatre Royal, Dumfries In March

Following the success of their 2020 Scotland tour the London-based 10-piece Down for the Count Swing Orchestra are excited to return to Dumfries with their new show Legends of Swing this March!

Down for the Count are one of the best-known bands on the UK vintage music scene and have earned themselves a reputation as one of the hardest-working swing bands performing in the UK today. ‘Legends of Swing’ is a lively, energetic and family friendly show, with no two performances ever the same. Down for the Count recreate the intimate atmosphere of a jazz club at each performance, with every moment spontaneous, and enjoyable for all lovers of live music. As band leader & manager Mike Paul-Smith explains, “Every show is different! We want people to leave the theatre feeling energised and inspired to go and find out more about the swing and jazz music which we in Down for the Count love.”

Ultimately the music is the star of the show; the band performs the music of classic artists including Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and Glenn Miller. As Mike says, “It’s a real honour to perform music that has stood the test of time.”.

Down for the Count have sold out shows at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, Cadogan Hall, and even Le Caveau de la Huchette in Paris – the oldest jazz club in Europe. During the COVID-19 pandemic they were awarded a grant from Arts Council England’s Cultural Recovery Fund, recognising the band as an organisation of important cultural significance. Last year, Down for the Count hit number one on the iTunes Jazz Chart with their single ‘When I Fall In Love’, which is available on their album ‘Down for the Count at The Cold Stores’.
