ROBYN STAPLETON
Robyn Stapleton is this year’s winner of the BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year award. Notable performances to date include singing for HRH Prince of Wales at Dumfries House, the East India Club in London, Scottish Parliament and Robbie Shepherd’s ‘Take The Floor’ on BBC Radio Scotland. Last year, Robyn graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with a First Class Honours degree in Scottish Music, specialising in Scots Song. She also spent one year at the Irish World Academy, Limerick, studying Irish music where she tutored by singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Danu). Passionate about community singing, Robyn is also building a strong reputation as a singing leader and tutor and is keen to pass on her knowledge of singing and of traditional music to others. 2014 is proving to be an exciting year for Robyn as she performs across the UK with the Robyn Stapleton Trio and for Live Music Now with vocalist Claire Hastings. She is also looking forward to developing intergenerational singing project, SongRoots over the coming months and is preparing to record her first album. Robyn will be joined by Hajime Tkahashi. A wonderfully talented guitarist from Tokyo who has been studying music at the University of Limerick, where he and Robyn met. Together, with Robyn’s hauntingly beautiful voice and Hajime’s unique playing style, these two are a stunning pair to watch and you definitely don’t want to miss them.
LUCY MILLER
Lucy has been singing for quite a long time. She was part of NYCoS (National Youth Choir of Scotland) as a child and a few years ago she was accepted into National Girls Training Choir and attended a course that lasted a week, with classical music every day . She has been playing guitar for a couple of years and her inspiration for that was her dad because he plays so well himself. Her dad also sings so that’s probably where she picked it up from. Her own personal music tastes range from David Bowie to Fleetwood Mac to Adele, it’s really varied. She doesn’t think she has a particular style, but if she likes a song she will just try and interpret it in her own way way. However, she is still most comfortable singing with a piano accompanied by her music teacher Ian Munro. Lucy is set to be one to remember. Make sure you catch her performance.
MICHAELA TENANT
Michala’s style is based around country and rock music. Her main influences are Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash as she really admires their song writing talents, something she hopes to do in the future.
She has played the guitar for almost four years and is pretty much self taught. She is one to watch and you will definitely enjoy hearing this young lady singing.
