Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival Focuses on Performing Arts Development

Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival focuses on Performing Arts Development

With the release of its Support for Ambition programme, the success of its recent Network Meet-Up of local creatives, venue managers and promoters from Moffat to Stranraer, and new partnership with leading national company Magnetic North the Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival is offering artists in the region some significant skills development opportunities.

Simon Hart, the organisation’s Director & CEO, said: We are proud to promote and celebrate the great work of local artists which adds so much to the cultural life and vitality of Dumfries & Galloway. Our SfA scheme provides funds for artists to take their early creative ideas and experiment and test them, to see if they want to take them further. This can be a long process but, as previous SfA recipient Tom Pow has demonstrated, this sort of start can lead to the success and acclamation of a show like The Village in the Road.

Support for Ambition (SfA) is Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival’s initiative that enables venues and promoters to present performance events in the region by providing financial, promotional, and advisory support.  Through its Support for Ambition (SfA) scheme, Dumfries & Galloway Arts Festival also helps regionally based creative performing arts practitioners to develop their artistic vision, and technical skills and working practices. This scheme also supports Dumfries & Galloway based performing arts venues to programme productions or events.

Performing arts venues in Dumfries and Galloway should be programming events in similar disciplines if they are looking to apply, with successful venues being eligible for financial, promotional and advisory support.

Venues can apply for a maximum of £1000, with Creative Practitioners allowance set at £3000.

The previous success of the Support for Ambition programme has provided an excellent platform for the organisation to re-launch in 2023. The team received many fantastic applications to be part of their programme in 2022, highlighting the high calibre of work that takes place in every corner of our region and showing how the industry is bouncing back after a hard period. The deadline for applications for this year’s SfA scheme, for both Venues and Creative Practitioners, is Monday the 30th of October 2023 at 12.00pm. Further information, including how to apply, can be found here.

The Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival recently hosted their first Network Meetup in Castle Douglas, on the 28th September 2023. This Network Meetup allowed venues, artists, promoters and creative practitioners to get together to share ideas, collaborate and support the development of the performing arts industry. The meet up gave organisations across the region the chance to discuss the arts sector within Dumfries and Galloway, and offer advice on areas where improvement is needed. This event was an excellent example of the performing arts development opportunities that the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival aim to host more of throughout 2024. There are already plans in place to host a similar type of event in the new year. The date for the next upcoming Network Meetup is planned to be the 7th of March 2024.

Magnetic North is an award-winning theatre company based in Edinburgh. They aim to give artists from a range of disciplines and backgrounds the nourishment, focused support and production opportunities needed to continue developing and creating great work throughout their careers. Rough Mix, in partnership with the Dumfries and Galloway Arts Festival and Magnetic North, is a paid creative lab for early-stage ideas and practice development: a two-week practical opportunity for artists to try out new ideas or new ways of working. It brings together a small core group of practitioners from different disciplines and gives them time to start developing new projects in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere. This opportunity focuses on mid-career artists, with an aim of developing already established creative ideas, projects and possibilities.

Rough Mix encourages boldness and innovation in the work of the artists who take part by giving them a unique opportunity to have a creative interaction with artists from different disciplines in a focused and supportive atmosphere. It is curated and led by Magnetic North’s Artistic Director Nicholas Bone, who has developed a distinctive and widely-respected approach to developing new work and creating links between artists and art-forms.

Previous participants include playwrights, choreographers, visual artists, film-makers, and composers. Previous editions of Rough Mix have been run in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Peebles, Perth, Auckland, Stirling and online. Construction Work at Dumfries Station Set to Enhance Accessibility

Scotland’s Railway is gearing up to commence construction work at Dumfries station, with the aim of providing step-free access between the platforms.

The project is scheduled to begin on Monday, 30th October 2023, and will continue until the summer of 2024.

Key Developments:

  • The existing footbridge at Dumfries station will be dismantled and replaced with a new accessible bridge equipped with lifts, serving platforms 1 and 2.
  • The existing footbridge will be closed to the public starting from Monday, 20th November. The installation of the new bridge is expected in spring 2024.
  • Train services will operate as usual through the station during the construction period, albeit with temporary changes to access routes.

The Project’s Aim:

The primary objective of this construction project is to enhance accessibility for passengers with limited mobility, families with young children, and those carrying luggage or bicycles. The new accessible bridge, equipped with lifts, will significantly improve the ease with which these passengers can move between the platforms.

Community Engagement:

Amanda Naughton, Network Rail’s scheme project manager for Dumfries station’s accessibility improvements, expressed gratitude for the community’s interest in the project. She also highlighted the project’s focus on creating a bridge design that complements the station’s unique architecture while improving the overall passenger experience and providing modern access standards to and from Dumfries.

Temporary Disruptions:

During the project, it’s important to note that there will be space restrictions in the platform 1 car park. Additionally, temporary changes to access will occur in the platform 2 car park during the bridge removal and installation phase.

Communication Efforts:

Residents living near the station will receive letters detailing key dates and milestones as the project progresses. This proactive communication approach aims to keep the community informed about upcoming developments.

Mitigating Inconvenience:

Network Rail acknowledges that, despite their efforts to minimize disruption, some noise may be unavoidable due to the equipment and heavy engineering involved in the project. The organization has expressed its appreciation for the patience of passengers, residents, and workers in the vicinity as they strive to deliver these essential improvements.

For further information about the project, interested parties are encouraged to visit the dedicated page ‘Du Access for All’ on the ScotlandsRailway website (scotlandsrailway.com) and follow @NetworkRailScot on Twitter for regular updates.

For any inquiries related to the work, you can email [email protected] or call the Network Rail 24-hour helpline at 03457 11 41 41.

Travelling Gallery Visits Dumfries & Galloway from 1st to 3rd November 2023

Travelling Gallery visits Dumfries & Galloway from 1st to 3rd November 2023

Travelling Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in a bus and in partnership with The Stove Network, will visit Dumfries & Galloway this November, with its latest exhibition, Take Care, a group show exploring our relationship to the non-human things we care for in an, often, isolated society. Artists include Uma Breakdown, Gwenan Davies, Ellie Kyungran Heo, Laura Wilson and Joy Baek with Sculpture Placement Group.

Working across a variety of mediums the artworks in the exhibition look at everything from the intimacy of baking, where artist Laura Wilson’s new video, You would still almost expect to find it Warm, presents growing, gloopy, fresh dough as a living organism that is alive with yeast; to the humble house plant where Ellie Kyungran Heo’s moving image work, Plantarians: appendix, explores our care of house plants asking, “Why is it that we place a plant in a pot, constricting its ability to grow and occupy physical space?”.

Continuing our relationship to non-human things, artist Uma Breakdown presents their video game Animal Agency, the multi-layered click and point game invites the player to work with animal-like creatures to move between a number of rooms and spaces. Gwenan Davies’ paintings then explore our ‘in-between’ times as she observes the ritual and social function of the coffee break, turning a sea of abandoned coffee cups into a surreal landscape.

Finally, Travelling Gallery is collaborating with Sculpture Placement Group (SPG) to exhibit the sculpture, Here, My waiting by Joy Baek, from their Loan scheme. The SPG Loan scheme works with artists to extend the life cycle of artworks that are currently in long-term storage, allowing people to care for and enjoy an artwork, often outside of a gallery context.

Graham Rooney, Operation Director at The Stove Network

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the travelling gallery on its tour of Dumfries & Galloway. Connecting people and places through creativity is fundamentally at the heart of what we aim to do here at The Stove, and this project is a fantastic example of where we can support access to the arts in an exciting and meaningful way.”

Dumfries & Galloway Quilt Festival 2023 A Huge Success

The 3rd annual Dumfries and Galloway Quilt Festival which is held at Shambellie House every year has been another huge success.

Over 1,000 visitors from far and wide came to enjoy over 340 quilts exhibited all around the house.    Quilts featured were from individual members of the 10 quilt groups in Dumfries and Galloway along with quilts from Cumbria, northern England all over Scotland and as far away as Canada.  Organising Committee member Elma Graham said “It is good to see the local quilt groups getting together to help put this on. This partnership has worked well over the past few years and we are planning to make it bigger and better.   Shambellie House lends itself to the variety of exhibits we hang:”

Demonstrations on most days featured Chrystine Livingston from Lochgilphead showing us how to paint fabric to include in quilted pieces, Margaret Attwood from Ruthwell displayed and taught visitors to do lacework, Claudia Chisholm from Newton Stewart showed off her expert skills in hand quilting and the Quilters of Shambellie House encouraged visitors to try quilting perhaps for the first time.

Volunteers helped out ‘front of house’ as well as many providing delicious home bakes which accompanied those made by the young adults from Cloverglen.   Ann Hill, BEM and Vice Chair of Shambellie House Trust said “Our partnership with Cloverglen allows us to give these service users the opportunity of baking, serving in the tea room during events such as the quilt show.   They absolutely love it and lend another dimension to what is happening at Shambellie House.   We have had so much fun and they enjoy talking to the visitors and showing them the quilted pieces they have been making with the quilters here at the house”.

The quilt challenge this year was ‘Features from Shambellie House” and many unique pieces were on show.  (both wallhangings by Ann Hill, Quilter)

The 2024 challenge has been set as “Flora and Fauna” – 18” x 24” in portrait.

The first of five raffle prizes went to Irene Charfadi from Dumfries who won a Liberty fabric hand made bed quilt.  Other prizes included another bed quilt, cushion, wallhanging and a beautiful sewing carrier case.

Elaine Milven, representing the Quilters Guild along with quilt groups in the region said “We used to have four quilt shows in Scotland and then we were down to one – The Scottish Quilt Championships which are held in Glasgow in March.   We decided the year before Covid to set one up in southern Scotland and Shambellie House very kindly gave us use of the house.   It has now become an annual event with Trustee’s and volunteers enjoying helping with all the duties involved in hanging, welcoming visitors, baking, story telling etc.”

The organising committee met up this week for a round up talk and an opportunity to enjoy tea and cakes themselves, something they said they never really got time to enjoy during the 20 days of the Festival.

Quilt classes continue at Shambellie House throughout the year and information can be found on the website at Shambelliehouse.org     “Quilt Fling” dates are 11th to 19th May 2024 and the 2024 Dumfries and Galloway Quilt Festival will run from 20th September to 6th October.
