Police Launch Summer safety initiative

Summer safety initiative

To coincide with the start of the school summer holidays, a joint initiative involving Police Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Youth Work, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Local Authority’s Community Safety Officers and the Local Authority Licensing Department has been developed, and will commence on Friday 28 June 2019.

Over the Easter holidays police in Dumfries noticed an increase in instances of anti-social behaviour within communities across the town, within parks and open spaces. Subsequent reports to police suggested an increase in the gathering of large groups of youths, the consumption of alcohol and associated anti-social behaviour and public nuisance type crimes.

As a result over the summer months these agencies will be working together to look at ways of reducing Anti-Social Behaviour and increasing engagement with young people, while offering signposting to diversionary activities, to ensure our communal areas can be equally enjoyed by everybody. This initiative will see agencies out and about on joint patrols or attending events across the wider Dumfries area.

Additionally, Dumfries and Galloway Youth Work offer a number of summer activities for all youngsters throughout the Dumfries and Galloway area.

Inspector Anna Boyd at Dumfries said “officers are keen to engage with young people in the local area and work with our partners to tackle any ongoing concerns the public may have. Our Community Policing Team will be focusing on intelligence led patrols and we will be proactive in tackling head on any anti-social behaviour. Our strong partnerships in Dumfries with other agencies allows us to co-ordinate our resources to best deal with emerging concerns.”
Station Manager Ian Anderson of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said “Through joint initiatives such as this one, our aim is to reduce the numbers of deliberate fires, false alarms and alarm actuations through education and engagement with our local communities. I would encourage the public to speak to our officers when they are out in the community or at any of the forthcoming events.”
Council Leader Elaine Murray said “I have received reports of several instances of underage drinking, littering and vandalism at weekends in an area of my own ward. I was very concerned, not simply because of the antisocial behaviour involved but of safety risks to the young people. I sought advice from Youth Work, the police and the Community Safety Team and am delighted that they are all working together to develop programmes offering alternative diversionary activity for our young people.”

A capacity crowd descended on Park Farm, Dumfries last weekend for Youth Beatz, the UK’s largest free youth music festival.

An audience of around 40,000 over the weekend was entertained by fantastic performances on the Youth Enquiry Service Stage from up and coming local performers, including Alix Apples, Just The Brave, DG Cheer, Caitlin Purdie, Connor Fyfe and Ethan Malcolm, followed by brilliant performances on the Oasis Centre Stage by festival headliners The Vamps, Sigma, Louisa and Professor Green.

Festival goers were also entertained by sets from the ever-popular I Am A Raver, featuring DJ Rankin, DJ Bad Boy, DJ Dexi, Gary McF, DJ Cammy, and DJ Zitkus.

Social media has been full of activity and going crazy over the course of the weekend, with some of the acts getting involved on social media. On Twitter, The Vamps member Connor Ball tweeted: “Amazing gig Dumfries. Thanks so much for having us. Now we’re off to write some songs!”

Saturday Headliner Louisa said “That was fun, thanks for having me! @youthbeatzofficial.

Nathan Grisdale who headlined the Oasis Centre Main Stage on Saturday night said: “That was AMAZING! Thank you for having me guys!”

Scottish singer songwriter Kerri Watt said before her performance: “@youthbeatz1 festival, I’ll see you on stage in 25 minutes, can’t wait to party with you!”

Just The Brave, a popular young Scottish boyband tweeted after their performance: “Youth Beatz was amazing today. Thanks so much for all of your support, you’re the best. Tag us in your pics and vids – Leo.”

THE TOON PRESENTS “DISNAE”, which is a major feature of Youth Beatz, is designed to be a hard hitting and shocking way of providing information to young people 14 – 25 about current issues that may be affecting them or may affect them in the future.

The interactive experience was hosted more than 3,600 young people on the Youth Beatz weekend – that is on top of the schools shows and preview performances to 2,000 young people in the week leading up to the festival weekend.

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Work Service, together with partners, support a group of young volunteers to deliver the interactive youth zone by attendance at issue-based training plus performance and production camps. The Toon invites groups of young people to experience issues focussed on domestic abuse, knife crime, drugs and alcohol, mental health and bullying in short interpretive scenes. The Toon got a surprise visit on Sunday night from festival Headliner Professor Green, who took the time to go through a scene from the drama production, and meet all of the young people involved.

Some of the comments from young people who went through The Toon were:

“I loved the theme this year, it was really interactive. The Peter Pan scene was excellent.”

“The Toon really opened my eyes as to what young people today go through, and knowing that I’m not alone.”

“What an eye-opening experience, a fantastic way of engaging young people in a peer educated approach.”

Other attractions on the weekend included a wide range of youth work activities from Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Young Persons Services team, activities from the Lifelong Learning and Wellbeing Team promoting their services. Youth work partners promoted their services alongside partners from local and national community organisations. The Kids tent was non-stop all day, and turned into a Dance Tent at night, which was packed both evenings. The performances delivered by local and national young people on the Youth Enquiry Service Stage and the Oasis Centre Main Stage were incredible.

Young People’s Champion, Councillor Adam Wilson, said: “Dumfries and Galloway Council is once again delighted with the high-quality event that has been delivered in our region, enjoyed by 40,000 young people over the course of the weekend. As Scotland’s largest free youth music festival, we have highlighted what Dumfries and Galloway has to offer and put it on the map as a destination for young people from across the country. This couldn’t have been delivered without the valuable input of all of the dedicated staff, events team and volunteers and we’re very appreciative of all their outstanding efforts.”
One young person attending the festival over the weekend said: “Had an absolute blast this week at Youth Beatz in Dumfries! What a day!”
Another festival goer said: “For my first ever festival Youth Beatz you have out done yourself, I travelled from Aberdeen and it was so worth it!”
Families travelled from across Scotland for the event. One said: “Dumfries and Galloway should be really proud of themselves, such an amazing event, and very well organised!”

The award-winning event was managed through a partnership led by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Young Persons Service in conjunction with the Oasis Events Team and Event Scotland. Funding for the event was secured from Dumfries and Galloway Council, Young Start, CashBack for Communities, Magnox, Creative Scotland, Alcohol and Drugs Partnership Dumfries and Galloway, the Robertson Trust, and YouthLink Scotland.

The Council’s Young Persons Service thanks all partners involved in planning the event and look forward to building on the success in the future.

200 D&G health and social care staff sing about ‘working together’

A VIDEO which sees 200 health and social care staff and volunteers from across Dumfries and Galloway sing about ‘working together’ is quickly gaining popularity across the Internet.

Nearly 32,000 people have so far watched a video uploaded last Wednesday which sees everyone from a GP to the General Manager of ICT, a social work team to care home staff help promote the work which takes place across Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership.

A spokesman for the Partnership, which has responsibility for the vast bulk of health and adult social care services, said: “There have been really significant changes in the structure of Scottish health and social care over the last few years, but we were aware that people might not realise just how integrated things have become under the Health and Social Care Partnerships.
“We thought a music video showcasing just some of the vast range of work taking place within our region might help to illustrate the scale of that integration, and also help strengthen that bond between all staff and volunteers.
“We licensed the rights to the song ‘Lets Work Together’, as popularised in the 60s by Canned Heat, and set about creating the video entirely in-house – utilising the skills of the men and women who work and volunteer within the Partnership.
“The response to the idea itself was overwhelming, and we simply weren’t able to feature everyone in the video. However, everyone who gave up just a couple of minutes from their busy days to take part had a great time, and we’re looking to continue filming over coming months to create different versions, and with a different focus.
“We owe thanks to so many people, including local radio DJ Lee Medd who very kindly provided a voiceover at the start of the video – as our central character sets off to work within the Partnership.
“Hopefully together we’ve helped to spread the message about ‘working together’, and demonstrated that Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership is a great place to live, work and play.”

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary Staff Nurse Christine Potts helps introduce the video, seen cycling to work at the new £212 million hospital which was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal in July 2018.

Christine said: “I initially responded to say that my hospital ward, D7, would be keen to feature – and they did a fantastic job.
“But as a result of that, I found myself being asked to take on the role of helping to introduce the video’s whistle-stop tour around some of the work taking place across Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Care Partnership on any given day.
“I’d never done anything like this before, but I have to say it was a huge amount of fun. It’s really rewarding that so many people now have a better understanding of all the services which take place within the Partnership, and they can see just how great a place the region is to come and work in. As the video shows, we’re a very friendly bunch.”

Julie White is Chief Officer for Dumfries and Galloway Health and Social Partnership, as well as Chief Operating Officer for NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Speaking about the video, Julie said: “We’re really pleased to be able to share this video showcasing the amazing activity which takes place on a daily basis right across the Partnership, which is made up of the NHS, the local authority, the Third Sector and Independent Sector.
“We’re incredibly grateful to our staff and volunteers who are dedicated to taking forward our aims of improving the health and wellbeing of our communities and delivering excellent health and social care to those requiring support.
“We’d also welcome anyone who has an interest in working within the Partnership to get in touch, and find out about the many excellent opportunities which exist within Dumfries and Galloway.”

Devils Porridge Museum holds first Commonwealth Sport’s Day

Devils Porridge first Commonwealth Sport’s Day

On Saturday June 22nd, the Devil’s Porridge Museum hosted its first Commonwealth Sport’s Day.  There were egg and spoon races, sack races, three legged races and even tug of war.  A party atmosphere was created by local young musician Jay who played the piano while Chameleon Face painters provided the beautiful face art.  To top it all, the Vice Chair of the Museum, Graham Croft, cooked delicious burgers and hot dogs on the barbecue.

“It was a really fun day” commented Judith Hewitt, Museum Manager.  “We recently came across a photo of girls in World War One having a tug of war somewhere in Eastriggs.  This got us thinking that we could do something similar.  We also have a document in our archive which tells of a Sports Day in 1919 which was held on Eastriggs playing ground and included workers from HM Factory Gretna getting involved in different sports.  We currently have an exhibition in the museum called ‘The Contribution of the Commonwealth’ which explores why Eastriggs is known as the Commonwealth village and it seemed like an ideal time to have a mini Commonwealth games of our own!”

The Devil’s Porridge Museum has a full programme of summer activities for young people from July 1st to August 17th.  All activities are free.

Chance to Get South of Scotland on The Map With OVO Energy Tour of Britain National Land Art competition

Tour of Britain National Land Art competition

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain’s National Land Art competition is returning  this September after the inaugural edition in 2018 captured the imagination of race fans across the UK and this time Dumfries and Galloway has an oportunity to be noticed as the Opening stage travels through the region and finishes in Kirkcudbright.

Communities, schools, clubs, businesses, land owners and farmers are once again being asked to come up with eye-catching creations in support of Britain’s most prestigious international cycle race, which returns for its 16th modern edition later this year (Saturday 7 – Saturday 14 September).

Last year’s National Land Art competition attracted over 50 entries, and was won by group of North Devon farmers from South Molton. Their giant bike creation, which comprised 19 tractors, 16 all-terrain vehicles, a 13-tonne excavator and one slurry tanker wrapped in plastic, impressively featured moving wheels, pedals and chain.

OVO Energy Tour of Britain Race Director Mick Bennett said: “The imagination and creativity shown in last year’s entries proved once again that British people are the most passionate in the world when it comes to supporting international cycle races.

“I’m already looking forward to seeing the roadside creations that will decorate the eight stages that form this year’s race route, although judging the winner and runners-up will no doubt prove a difficult decision once again!”

A panel comprising Mick Bennett, ITV4 presenter Rebecca Charlton and representatives from race organiser SweetSpot will decide the top three pieces of art at the end of this year’s event.

The winner will receive a trophy and commemorative Tour of Britain prizes, presented in person by Mick Bennett, while the runner-up and third-place finisher will also take home trophies for their efforts.

While the tradition of creating land art masterpieces along the route has long been the practice at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, as well as other cycle races around the world, the idea behind the competition stems from the creativity of Nottinghamshire farmer Des Allen.

His sheep-based land art design, which was aired live during the event’s ITV4 coverage and broadcast around the world to over 120 countries, went viral during the 2017 race.

He said: “We were staggered by the response that our small efforts received. We did it as a bit of fun and the response was fantastic.  I would urge people to have a go; from a little bit of effort it is amazing the response you receive.”

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain begins in Glasgow’s George Square on Saturday 7 September, finishing eight days later on Deansgate in the heart of Manchester city centre on Saturday 14 September.

ITV4 will once again screen live free-to-air coverage flag-to-flag of each stage in the UK, along with a nightly highlights programme of the best of the action.

The OVO Energy Tour of Britain is British Cycling’s premier road cycling event, giving cycling fans the opportunity to see the world’s best teams and riders competing on their doorstep and helping to build a great cycling nation.
