The volunteers had worked hard in the run up to the day to ensure the facilities were ready to welcome the public. The fundraising team provided endless supplies of tea, coffee and home made cakes whilst the water safety team talked to people about the dangers around our coastline.

Families had the chance to view Kippford’s D Class lifeboat Ronnie Sinclair up close and chat to the crew about the equipment and their role at the station. Lifeboats from Workington RNLI, Kirkcudbright RNLI and Nith Inshore Rescue also arrived at Kippford along with the Portling Coastguard Rescue Team.

Observers were able to watch a demonstration of all 4 boats working together to transfer a stretcher between them and then run some man overboard drills. The coastguard team also demonstrated their rope set up for cliff rescue at the side of the water.

The crew from Workington RNLI kindly allowed visitors on board their Shannon Class lifeboat Dorothy May White and spent time explaining some of the equipment on board.

The forecasted bad weather did not arrive in Kippford and everyone was able to enjoy themselves in dry and pleasant conditions. The day was rounded off with a disco and buffet for ticket holders in the Anchor Hotel which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

New Apprenticeship Aims To Upskill Farmers

New apprenticeship aims to upskill farmers
The two-year technical apprenticeship is aimed at those already working in agriculture

A new apprenticeship is being offered by Scotland’s Rural College to prepare farmers for the fourth industrial revolution (4iR), with rapid technological growth and interconnectivity changing the way we live and work.

As part of the 4iR, agriculture is facing both challenges and opportunities, including a need for higher level training and continuing professional development (CPD).

The first of its kind for the land-based sector in Scotland, the technical apprenticeship for rural land use and management will equip farm workers with the relevant high-level core skills required to become competent in leadership roles.

The two-year HND and Degree-level programme is aimed at people aged 18 and over who are already employed in the industry. It includes both online and in-person learning and offers two specialist pathways – Agricultural Livestock and Crops.

It allows them to upskill at any point in their career, gain hands-on industry experience and improve their career prospects and employability.

Mary Thomson, Vice Principal for Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: “The technical apprenticeship has been developed alongside industry, for industry.
“We are excited to see it come to fruition as well as the opportunities and growth that will come for both the apprentices and the employers, who will benefit from the strategic partnerships and world leading research which informs all our educational programmes at SRUC.”
Penny Montgomerie, Chief Executive of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs, said: “The launch of the new SRUC technical apprenticeship is an exciting development for agriculture in Scotland, enabling those in the industry to continue working while gaining a higher education qualification.
“It is the perfect partnership for farms looking to keep the expertise and knowledge of their employees up to date. It will also enable career progression for those who have to date had a more hands-on role in farming.
“We look forward to some of our members participating and seeing how this enhances both their skillset and their employers’ business.”

Jock Survives Last Stage Scare To Secure RSAC Scottish Rally Victory

Armstrong survives last stage scare to secure RSAC Scottish Rally victory

Castle Douglas driver Jock Armstrong took the second RSAC Scottish Rally victory of his career on Saturday (22 July) despite putting his Subaru Impreza on its side on the final stage of the event.

Armstrong and co-driver Hannah McKillop endured a rollercoaster of a weekend, heading into the sixth and final Dalbeattie test tied on times with young charger Finlay Retson after a thrilling day-long battle for the coveted victory.

In a nail-biting four-mile decider, it would go down to the wire but Armstrong persevered, claiming victory with last year’s winners Michael Binnie and Claire Mole taking the runner up spot in their Ford Fiesta R5. After a slow start, David Henderson and Chris Lees rounded out the podium in their Fiesta Rally2.

Supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council for the twenty-sixth time, the 77th running of the popular rally saw the event make a new home in Dalbeattie offering the chance for a revised format and stages that have never been used on the event previously. From the rally base at Jas P Wilson Forest Machines, almost ninety crews would face six tests in the Dalbeattie, Kinharvie and Ae forests before the traditional champagne finish celebrations back in Dalbeattie town.

It was Armstrong who was quickest out of the blocks on the opening stage, setting the scratch time four seconds faster than Binnie who was still adapting to R5 machinery. Retson responded on the second test and moved up to second overall in the process, from then on it was a sensational tit-for-tat battle between the two crews, heading into the last stage equal on times.

Armstrong threw caution to the wind in a bid to clinch the win. But the Subaru pilot drifted wide on a left-hand bend, putting the car momentarily on its side in a ditch, with all hopes of a win evaporating.

But Retson and co-driver Paul Beaton suffered drama of their own, failing to emerge from the stage in their Fiesta Rally2, giving a surprised Armstrong the victory, adding to his 2011 tally and maximum points in the KNC Groundworks Scottish Rally Championship.

It would be Duns driver Michael Binnie who benefited from Retson’s departure, taking second place, and giving co-driver Mole an honourable send-off as she tackled her final championship event.

Henderson struggled with a poor tyre choice over the opening loop but hauled his Fiesta from eighth on the first stage, to the final podium spot by the close. John Wink and Neil Shanks tried to pressure Henderson but lost out on third by a slender one second, to take fourth in their Hyundai i20 R5.

That left Stephen Petch and Michael Wilkinson to round out the top five in their Skoda Fabia R5, just five seconds adrift.

Local honours were left to Iain Wilson and Chris Williams who secured sixth in their Fiesta Rally2. Building confidence after a sizeable shunt on the Jim Clark Rally, Wilson also handed over his facility to the rally in Dalbeattie for Rally HQ and service during the weekend. He also took home the Bandeath Trophy for “Star of the Rally”.

The battle to be top two-wheel drive crew went the way of Ford Escort MKII crew John Crawford and Josh Davison who fought off the advances of Stuart Egglestone and Brian Hodgson in their Historic specification example.

The UK Armed Forces Rally Team (UKAFRT) would celebrate their 60th year at the Scottish Rally, with the familiar Land Rovers entertaining the crowds as usual in the forests and top spot went to Danny Hedges and Ben Hall.

Clerk of the Course, Jonathan Lord is thrilled with how the reinvigorated rally has been received.

“It’s always a challenge to move an event of this size to a new home but I am delighted by the feedback we have received after bringing the Scottish Rally to Dalbeattie,” he says.
“We have been welcomed with open arms by the townsfolk and it was fantastic to take the rally into the heart of the town for the re-group and finish celebrations. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dumfries and Galloway Council for their unrivalled support and Jas P Wilson Forest Machines for the use of their magnificent facilities in Dalbeattie. After a short break, we will once again be starting our preparation for the 2024 edition of the rally”.

Former winners of the event include World Rally Championship legends such as Colin McRae, Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola and Stig Blomqvist although more recently, it has been local ace David Bogie from Dumfries who has signed his name in the history books, winning the event a record-breaking seven times over the years.

Australia Over 60s Defeat Scotland at Nunholm in Inaugural Match

Australia O60s defeat Scotland at Nunholm in inaugural match

This week Dumfries Cricket Club hosted two Scotland age-group representative matches at Nunholm.

On Monday, it was a first for Scottish seniors’ cricket when Scotland Over-60s played the Australian Over-60s team which is touring the United Kingdom. The teams were led onto the pitch to the playing of bagpipes before the sides lined up for their national anthems. In the match a talented Australian side overcame a competitive Scotland team, including local Galloway player Stevie Carr, by 92 runs in what was a successful first encounter.  Australia hit 274 for 5 wickets and Scotland scored 182 for 8 in reply. Both sides enjoyed their day of cricket in Dumfries before the Australians travelled back south to next play England in the third match in their ‘Grey Ashes’ contest. On Wednesday, it was the other end of the age spectrum at Nunholm with Scotland Under-15s playing Durham Under-16s in the ECB County Cup.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Dumfries opening bowler James Hobman contributed figures of 2 wickets for 8 runs as Scotland U19s beat Durham by six wickets.

In the Saturday leagues, Dumfries 2nd XI lost in an exciting finish, by just one wicket, to Drumpellier 2nds, Langloan, in Western Championship One with top run scorer Sibo Sithole the S&R Roofing Player of the Match.

Langloan put the Nunholm side in on what proved to be a difficult wicket to bat on. Despite that the openers Sithole and Vaughn Staples put together what was the highest partnership of the fixture. They had put Nunholm in a strong position with an opening stand of 77 before Sithole was run out, shy of his fifty, for 44. Staples followed soon afterwards for 23 and the remainder of the batting order found things difficult with a succession of wickets falling. Bainbridge reached double figures and Tommy McGrath was the sixth wicket out for 18 at 127 for 6 before Nunholm were rapidly all out for 130 in only thirty overs after not batting long enough.

McGrath struck early with two Langloan wickets and Hyder Hussain also took a wicket bowled in an excellent spell. On debut, junior Billy Morgan bowled well in tandem with Trevor Newport whose control was not rewarded with a wicket. Langloan had reached 72 when youngster Abdullah Naseri, also on his debut, took two wickets in his first over to give Nunholm a chance. He then followed that up with a third and then McGrath took two more. Staples bowled the number nine to reduce the home side to 112 for 9 but the Dumfries side just failed to break the final partnership as they won in a tense finish in the 41st over with no Langloan batter passing twenty.

In Western Premiership One the Dumfries 1st XI fixture against Stirling County at Nunholm was cancelled due to wet conditions.

Junior Cricket: Dumfries Cricket Club’s Summer Camps are underway on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ages 5 up to 13. Contact the Club on [email protected] or find the club online at www.dumfriescricketclub.com.
