LESSER USED D&G GRAVE YARDS TO SEE CUT IN GROUND CARE

Little used grounds offer budget saving

The DGFirst Management Committee (25 March 2014) is being recommended to agree reduced maintenance arrangements for little used cemeteries and open spaces across the region in order to make necessary budget savings of £200k.

An assessment of the number of interments over the last 5 years has identified cemeteries that are seldom used for new interments. The proposal is that the frequency of grass cutting in these cemeteries will in future be reduced to 3 times a year. However, assurance is given that, should an interment be needed, a pathway to the appropriate lair will be prepared along with a suitable area for mourners.

Following discussions with staff, open space areas have also been identified where it is proposed to reduce or stop grounds maintenance. These include areas where there are maintenance problems due to ground conditions. Assurances are given that paths will be cut to ensure that people can walk through safely and that all play areas and sports pitches will continue to be maintained.

The required savings options and service proposals to achieve the necessary savings were included in the budget report (savings option template 29) agreed by the Council (6 February 2014). Member seminars to discuss the options were held across the region in March 2014.

Councillor Stephen Thompson, chairman of DGFirst Management Committee, said, “Across our region, DGFirst manages and maintains 1,200 areas of ground and open space plus areas that have floral displays or planting. Our Council has to make savings of £27m over the next 3 years. It is absolutely essential that we prioritise where we need to spend money and where we can save money. Reducing or stopping grounds maintenance on little used areas is an obvious example of a savings opportunity.”

Sport Relief Events galore in Wigtownshire this weekend

Sport Relief Events galore in Wigtownshire this weekend

Dumfries and Galloway Council are hosting various events for Sport Relief 2014. Events will take place throughout the whole weekend in aid of the charity.

Children from the Learning Centres in Park Primary, Belmont Primary and Stranraer Academy have been taking part in this year’s Ability session three week challenge organised between Facilities Wigtown, Disability Development and YMCA Stranraer. Children from Belmont and Park Learning Centre and Stranraer Academy Aird Learning Unit have completed 10 stations over the past fortnight. Friday 21 March will see the last session of the three week programme where all the groups will come together with sponsor money in hand dressed in their athletic themed costumes.

On Saturday 22 March sees Leisure and Sport host the second Charity Football Tournament for Sport Relief. Last year saw 14 teams come together with 139 players participating on the day, raising £1000. The tournament is on from 4pm – 8pm at Stranraer Academy, with players having to pay £5 to play, with all money raised going to Sport Relief. Local businesses have come together to sponsor the event to boost the total.

The Sport Relief Sunny Stranraer Seaside Mile takes place on Sunday 23 March at Agnew Park, Stranraer. The only Official Sport Relief Mile in Dumfries and Galloway takes runners around Agnew Park with the first race starting at 12 noon with registration available from 11.30am, with the second race starting at 1pm. Runners can choose to run 1 mile, 3 miles or 6 miles around the Park to help raise money for a variety of excellent causes. The route is disabled friendly and there are car parking and toilet facilities available. Runners can also sign up online at the following link http://my.sportrelief.com/search/event/results?postcode=DG9+8PL

Sunday 23 March 2014 also sees Council Leisure and Sport staff Rachel Melville, Rebekah Goupillot and Penny Marshall taking part in a Triathlon in the Ryan Centre, Stranraer in aid of Sport Relief. The Triathlon will consist of 2.5 mile swim, 80 mile cycle and an 18 mile run which be done collectively by the group of girls and will start at 10am. Donations can be made on the day in the Sports Relief buckets, or by visiting my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/a-trio-set-for-a-triathlon and everyone is encouraged to come along to cheer on the three girls.

Wigtown Area Committee Chair, Councillor Jim McClung said of the Sport Relief weekend event plans; “I fully support all the events being held across Wigtownshire in aid of Sport Relief. Sport gives us the chance to be active, to work together in teams as well as teaching us about some life skills such as discipline and good preparation. Events such as the Seaside Mile also offer up a great way of getting families and communities together and raise some money for such a worthwhile cause. I wish the 3 members of staff all the best in their Triathlon and would encourage everyone to get involved in any way they can over the weekend, be it taking part, spectating or donating to Sport Relief. Also, good luck to all taking part in the football match for Sport Relief…may the team who scores the most goals win! In all seriousness, the real winner here is Sport Relief, so I wish everyone taking part good luck this weekend.”

STEWARTRY RFC BEAT CLYDEBANK IN RESCHEDULED GAME

STEWARTRY 18 CLYDEBANK 5

This RBS West League Division Two game was rescheduled from earlier in the season when the fixture was abandoned due to the referee being injured.

Starting the game Clydebank’s kick was secured by Stewartry forwards who attacked quickly. The ball went out to right winger Fergusson. Running on to crash ball at pace he charged up the wing breaking through 3 tackles to score under the posts. Mosey’s conversion gave the Blacks a 7 point lead with only 2 minutes gone.

In the eighth minute the first kickable penalty was given to the home side on the Stewartry 22 because the Blacks held on to the ball on the ground. Clydebank went for a lineout 7 metres from the Stewartry line but Porteous took the ball allowing David Kerr to clear back to the 22.

Securing their own throw at another lineout inside the Blacks 22 the home pack drove forward over the Stewartry line but the ball was held up. At the 5 metre scrum the home side took the heal. The ball came out to their number 10 who kicked for a drop goal but the ball hit the left post. In the follow up ruck Clydebank gave away a penalty for not releasing. Mosey cleared the ball down field.

Mounting an another attack on the home line Stewartry were penalised for offside giving the home team a lineout but their throw in was not straight. Taking the ball at the back of the scrum Mosey kicked the ball deep into the Clydebank 22 but at the lineout the Blacks gave away another penalty for jumping too early. The Clydebank kick did not find touch.

Counter attacking Stewartry knocked on 10 metres from the Clydebank line. At the scrum the home pack took the heal but good pressure from Cammy Fenwick made a Clydebank player knock on giving the Blacks a 5 metre scrum. Again the home pack pushed Stewartry back on their own heal allowing Clydebank to spoil and get a turnover but they were penalised for not releasing the ball.

Mosey added another 3 points with the penalty. Twenty five minutes into the first period Broll went on in place of Cannon. John Kerr secured the restart and made ground up to halfway. Passing to Fergusson he made another jinking run before putting the ball to McCarney but he was stopped 15 metres short of the home line. Clydebank knocked on in the tackle.

Clydebank took the heal against the head and they broke away up the right wing and into the Blacks 22 but went into touch. Stewratry took the ball in the lineout but knocked on. At the scrum the home side delayed the put in giving the Blacks a free kick and another lineout on halfway.

In the last two minutes of the first period Stewratry got deep into home territory. Clydebank were penalised for offside but the kick went wide leaving the  halftime score at 10 – 0 to Stewartry.

The second period started with a Blacks kick off and Cannon back on in place of McMorran. A Clydebank forward caught the restart inside their own 22 but superb follow up by the Stewartry pack got them a turnover. Ian Fenwick picked up the ball at the back of the ruck, went left and passed to Smith who crashed over the home line for a try. The conversion went wide.

With 6 minutes gone in the second period,  Stewartry deep inside their own 22 gave away a penalty for handling on the ground. The home side took a quick tap kick and drove in to score an unconverted try left of the posts.

Securing the restart ball the Blacks attacked again up to the home 22 where Clydebank knocked on. Taking the heal in the scrum the ball came back and out to Fergusson who charged through three defenders heading for the home line before he was stopped short. The Blacks got the push on in the 5 metre scrum but it wheeled round.

At the reset scrum, again Clydebank took one against the head but their clearing kick went to ground and into touch. Clydebank took the ball in the lineout which turned into a ruck but they were penalised for handling on the ground. Mosey put another 3 points on the board.

Midway through the second period McMorran went back on to replace Broll and Thomson substituted D Kerr. The home team were given a kickable penalty on the Stewartry 22 for holding on to the ball on the ground. They opted for a lineout but it didn’t come to anything.

With 15 minutes remaining Hogg replaced McCarney. From a ruck the ball came back to the Stewartry backs which saw Hogg break up the left wing into the home 22 but the Blacks were offside.

In the last 10 minutes Riddick replaced Fergusson and reluctantly J Kerr came off to be replaced by Sainsbury. With 5 minutes left on the clock the Blacks were penalised for not rolling away from the tackle giving Clydebank another penalty and again they went for a lineout. Porteous spoiled to deny the home forwards good possession.

Cannon came off to be replaced by McCulloch. At a scrum in Stewratry territory the Blacks broke up the left wing but were stopped. Clydebank secured the ball but they too were stopped. At the ruck Muir came in and got a turnover and made ground into home territory but in the tackle the ball was knocked on.

At the scrum in the last minute the Blacks were penalised for collapsing taking the game to full time with the score Stewartry 18 Clydebank 5.

If Clydebank had taken all the kickable penalties the score might have been different. The Blacks need to cut down the unforced errors

Art & Craft in its Natural Environment as Gallery is Transformed into a Home

From ceramics to wallpaper – Spring Fling shows how you can furnish and decorate completely from Dumfries and Galloway

Parts of a Dumfries art gallery have been transformed so visitors can see how beautiful craft, design and visual art would look in their own homes.

The Spring Fling @ Home exhibition, which opens at the Gracefield Arts Centre on Saturday 15 March, shows how you can get a full range of high-quality furnishings and decorations which are all created in Dumfries and Galloway.

Lucianne Lassalle, a sculptor from the hamlet of Wallaceton, said: “Most work is made for a home not a gallery. This is a great chance to visualise what things will really look like in your own house.”

Lucianne is known for her highly dramatic sculptures, which include fabulous figures of wild creatures which are part human and part animal.

The exhibition also reflects how much work produced by the region’s designers and makers is intended to be used rather than just displayed.

Clare Dawdry, who makes functional stoneware and earthenware, said: “I’m really excited about this exhibition because it will put my work in context, rather than having it up on a white plinth.
“I make pots which I hope people will enjoy using in their own homes and which will enhance the experience of eating and cooking.”

Clare, based in Kirkpatrick Durham, was originally inspired by a friend in Australia. She said: “When I went round there I loved choosing the pots and plates we would eat from.

“It’s something I now want to offer other people – everything I make is home-made and hand thrown on the wheel. No piece is ever exactly the same, so people have something that is distinctively theirs to enjoy.”
Furniture maker Pete Brown, from Eskdalemuir, is also delighted to have his work exhibited in a home-style environment.

He said: “Everything I make is intended for the home, so it’s great that it’s going to be displayed in a more homely setting.”

Pete, who as well as making furniture is a member of the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team, has spent many years honing his skills – including a period helping with the restoration of a chateau in the south of France.
He specialises in hard woods and is known for the quality and durability of his designs.

“I pay close attention to detail, that’s something which is very important to me. And I also expect what I create to outlast me!”

Peter’s clients are from all over the world and can now be found in some very exclusive residences – one customer had a piece flown home by private jet.

Urpu Sellar, from Dundrennan, is a ceramicist whose work brings out the humour in the everyday. She said: “What’s lovely about this exhibition is that it’s a chance to see art and craft in its natural habitat – which is the home.”

The exhibition is produced by Spring Fling, the Dumfries and Galloway visual art and craft movement, which is currently promoting the region’s creative community through a series of regional and UK exhibitions.

Leah Black, Spring Fling Director, said: “There is so much creativity in Dumfries and Galloway that we wanted to show how you could furnish and decorate your home from high-quality work produced within the region.
“These days the range extends from wallpapers, textiles and pictures through to furniture and ceramics – the creativity of our region is quite amazing.

“And when people buy visual art or craft, it’s normally for the home, so we thought it would be really useful for people to get an idea of what something looks like in a domestic setting.”

SOLWAY YACHT CLUB HANDS OVER CHARITY CHEQUE

The Solway Yacht Club  Cheque handed over to the OCHRE Charity
Duncan Gillespie (right), Commodore of Solway Yacht Club, accompanied by Ross Kennedy (left), committee member of Solway Yacht Club, recently handed over a cheque for £2044 to Alan Lapsley, Chairperson for OCHRE in Glasgow.
Following the tragic and sudden death of Fiona Meikle-Latta at the age of 45, while Commodore of the Solway Yacht Club from oesophageal cancer, the Yacht Club hosted a winter barbeque in her memory. Although only the Commodore for a short time her warm welcome to everyone she met influenced the club and its members. So she is sadly missed but her legacy remains even today. However, she was not only an active member of the yacht club but living in the community of Kirkmahoe she was also active on their Community Council and their Rural where her competitive spirit was also evident. The Yacht Club were therefore pleased to invite Yacht Club members, family, friends and members of Community Council and Rural who donated and attended the BBQ in Kippford which included a raffle of donations from club members and local business such as Galloway Activity Centre and Prana Hair and Beauty.
Food was cooked on the club balcony, eaten in doors and the bar was open. Proceeds from ticket sales and bar takings were donated.
OCHRE is one of very few Scottish based oesophageal cancer charities and it was appropriate in Fiona’s memory to raise funds and help them to promote awareness of this cancer. They also provide support and funding for research in development of new and appropriate methods of prevention and early detection. They will provide support for patients, family and friends to help cope with the difficulties arising from this cancer and its treatment.
Alan Lapsley, himself a sufferer seven years before, indicated that hot spots for this cancer include the west of Scotland and Ireland. Oesophageal cancer is the sixth most common causes of cancer death and the fourth most common in men. Ochre is actively pursuing the inclusion of a full-time nurse specialist in oesophageal cancer based at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
Alan also indicated they are lobbying to have the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) updated which indicates that this cancer occurs mainly in people over the age of 55. However, people in their 20’s are being diagnosed.
The Solway Yacht Club is very proud to be associated with such a worthy cause.

Last Saturday evening the Telford Tigers returned to Dumfries for the first time since they won the St Andrew’s Cup in an impromptu penalty shootout competition last November. Unfortunately the Ice Hockey Gods failed to shine on them this time around and the Sharks ran out comfortable winners by eleven goals to two.

Telford battled hard in the opening period and it took the Sharks until the eight minute mark to open the scoring through Ross Murray when he collected a Juraj Senko pass and skipped across the face of the Titans goal before pulling his shot back onto target from a narrow angle. The scorers were not to be troubled for another eight minutes Struan Tonnar and Mark Gallagher combined to set up Juraj Senko’s to blast home from the slot. Within seconds of the restart Tonnar was again the creator, this time for Ciaran Quinn, who was unlucky to be denied by the post. However, the respite for the visitors was not to last long. On the seventeen minute mark Solway stretched their lead to three when Gary Russell, vacating his goal to play as a forward for the evening, collected another neat pass from Tonnar and eased a back-handed shot past the Telford keeper from close range. A minute from time the Sharks advantage became four when Pavol Melichercik found his way onto the scoresheet. The Slovakian forward’s initial shot was blocked by netminder Gospel but he had the presence of mind to collect the rebound behind the goal-line and fire home a shot via that found the net via the keeper’s back.

To all intents and purposes the game was over as a contest at this point but Solway were determined not to let their momentum slip as we move towards the business end of the season and to this end they ran in six more second period goals. Within a minute of the re-start Ciaran Quinn had a little better luck in front of goal when Joe Coulter and Juraj Senko combined to set him up to score his first league goal of the season. Five minutes later Pavol Melichercik netted his second goal of the night with a neat finish from a Craig Thurston pass and just after the mid-way point in the game roles were reversed when Thurston shot home after a collecting a Melichercik pass. Just after the thirty-five minute mark Solway captain Mark Gallagher squeezed home sharks eighth goal from a narrow angle in a goalmouth scramble and he proved he was the “daddy” four minutes later with a shot into the roof of the Telford goal that sent the keepers’ water bottle flying. With just one second remaining in the session the Sharks made it into double figures when Juraj Senko sent a bullet into the net after being set up by Gary Russell and Mark Gallagher.

With the game won the Sharks may have taken their foot off the pedal a little in the final period but all credit to Telford as they never stopped trying and won the final session two-one. On the forty-three minute mark Berwyn Hughes and Simon Harrison combined to set up Callum Griffin to score with a shot that deputy netminder Andrew Little would probably want back. However the Sharks youngster produced a number of excellent saves in this game most notably right on the mid-way point when he spread-eagled himself to deny Paul Rigby. Seven minutes into the period Solway regained their ten goal advantage when Gary Russell found himself in the right place at the right time to prod home the rebound after Gospel had made a good pad save from Struan Tonnar. With six minutes remaining Telford completed the scoring with a well-taken consolation goal from Paul Rigby who fired home with conviction after collecting a Paul Davis pass.

Scoring statistics for the Sharks were as follows: Juraj Senko two goals and four assists, Mark Gallagher 2+3, Gary Russell 2+2, Pavol Melichercik 2+1, Craig Thurston 1+1, Ciaran Quinn and Ross Murray both 1+0, Struan Tonnar 0+3, Iain Bowie, Frazer Goldie, and Joe Coulter all 0+1. Andrew Little in the Sharks goal saved fourteen of the sixteen shots that he faced (save percentage 87.50%). The PET Man of the Match Awards were presented to Gary Russell for the home side and to Sean Weeks for the visitors.

On Sunday the Solway Sharks, sponsored by Magnox Ltd, were on the road for a crucial Northern Cup fixture against old rivals the Billingham Stars knowing that a victory would be vital in their efforts to reach next month’s cup final. After a stuttering first period performance that saw them go a goal down the Sharks recovered their composure to play two period of outstanding hockey and claim an eight-two win.

From the opening face drop Billingham attempted to take control of the game while Solway were looking distinctly like they had bus legs. Gradually the hosts began to take a greater share of possession and territory but rarely looked like scoring until the referee, Mr. Brown, awarded the Stars a disputed penalty shot on Ross Murray’s trip. The result, however, was in no way controversial as Michael Elder went straight up the middle and fired home just inside the right-hand post. From then until the first interval play resumed in a similar pattern as it had before the opening goal with Billingham looking comfortable if not dominant.

Whatever coach Grubb said to his charges during the first break certainly worked as Solway returned to the ice for the second session a changed side. Immediately they went onto the offensive as wave after wave of attack headed towards the Billingham goal, something had to give and four minutes into the session it did. A bobbling puck in the Stars defence found its way into the right-hand face-off circle where Frazer Goldie was waiting to beat the keeper at his near post. Not content the Sharks continued to attack and took the lead three minutes later. When Pavol Melichercik collected a Craig Mitchell pass behind the Billingham goal he had the composure to wait patiently until Iain Bowie was able to find half a yard of space in the slot. That was all he needed and when the pass came his way the Solway marksman rifled home his shot.

The Sharks extended their lead to two with eight minutes remaining in the session when Pavol Melichercik picked up the rebound and shot home from the slot after Watson in the Stars goal had done well to make a pad save from another Bowie shot. The Solway onslaught was relentless and if it had not been for some excellent saves from Mark Watson then the Dumfries side would have been out of sight by the second interval. As it happened the Sharks did have one more second period goal in them which came with six minutes to play. Stevie Moore collected a Ciaran Quinn pass and shot for goal only to see Watson make another good pad save. Unfortunately for the Stars keeper, Ross Murray was waiting in the left face-off circle and was able to reach behind him and pull his shot back into the unguarded portion of the net.

The final period started with a powerplay coming Solway’s way with a holding call on James McCabe and with a man advantage the Sharks laid siege to the Billingham goal. Within a minute Struan Tonnar and Pavol Melichercik combined to send Frazer Goldie across the face of the home goal and the big D-man calmly slotted home at the far post. Four minutes later an Iain Bowie pass allowed Tonnar to close in on goal and as he approached the net he spotted a gap and neatly slotted the puck home between the keeper’s legs. Eight minutes into the final period more pressure on the Billingham goal saw Joe Coulter and Juraj Senko work the puck back to James Wallace at right point. The popular defenceman took aim and fired a slapshot through a crowded goalmouth that may have unsighted the keeper but the puck certainly found the net.

Billingham were not totally inactive through all of this and on the mid-way point in the match Luke Brown brought the best out of Gary Russell when the Sharks keeper denied the Billingham youngster with a terrific double pad save. With nine minutes remaining the Sharks produced a flowing move that saw Melichercik pick up a Tonnar pass and speed up centre-ice and, closing in on goal, he committed the keeper before lifting his shot over the keepers’ dive. Three minutes from time the Stars did give their supporters a consolation goal when James McCabe battled past a couple of challenges on a delayed penalty before driving his shot past Russell from six yards out.

Scoring statistics for the Sharks were as follows: Pavol Melichercik two goals and two assists, Frazer Goldie 2+0, Iain Bowie and Struan Tonnar both 1+2, James Wallace and Ross Murray both 1+0, Craig Mitchell 0+3, Gary Russell, Ciaran Quinn, Juraj Senko, Stevie Moore and Joe Coulter all 0+1. Gary Russell in the Sharks goal saved twenty-five of the twenty-seven shots that he faced (save percentage 92.592%). Two goal Frazer Goldie was named the Sharks Man of the Match.

LOCAL MSP SIGNS UP TO SUPPORT SCOTTISH TOURISM WEEK

LOCAL MSP SIGNS UP TO SUPPORT SCOTTISH TOURISM WEEK

Dumfriesshire MSP Elaine Murray has thrown her support behind Scottish Tourism Week which started this Monday (10 March 2014).

Scottish Tourism Week is organized by the industry’s lead organisation, the Scottish Tourism Alliance. The aim of the week is to give tourism businesses from all over Scotland a chance network and engage with one another and find the best way to boost the tourist industry.

Commenting on the week, Dr Murray said:

“Tourism plays a key role in our local economy with a number of hotels and tourist attractions across the region.  I welcome a week in which businesses comes together to discuss how to boost the industry. “

“Going forward, I think the priority will be to make sure that any growth in the industry is sustainable, that the image of Scotland that goes out is attractive and that we give people a good experience and that people want to come back in future years.”

“This, together with the film industry’s use of the spectacular locations available to film crews in Scotland bodes well for Scottish tourism. I am also conscious that the vast majority of our tourists come from England, which serves to highlight the strong cultural links and connections that we have, and want to maintain and strengthen, with those living south of the border.”
