LOCAL MP PRAISES EMPLOYERS BACKING FOR APPRENTICESHIPS

RUSSELL BROWN MP PRAISES EMPLOYERS BACKING FOR APPRENTICESHIPS

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown has praised local employers who back the fight against youth unemployment by taking on local young people, after meeting with an apprentice in Dumfries on a recent visit.

The local MP made his comments following a visit to Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership (DGHP) properties in Syme Road in Dumfries to meet local apprentices at work from DGHP’s repairs contractor Lovell.

The visit took place as part of National Apprenticeship Week, set up by the Labour Government in 2008 as part of its commitment to apprenticeships which saw the number of apprenticeship starts rise dramatically from 65,000 in 1996/97 to almost 280,000 in 2009/10.

On his visit to Syme Road, the MP met 17 year old Owen MacGregor, a trainee plasterer with Lovell in his first year of his apprenticeship with the contractor. Owen, who is from Annan, started with Lovell in September 2013 after a one year plastering course at Dumfries and Galloway College.

Owen now spends two days a week in class at college and his other three days on the job with Lovell, gaining invaluable practical experience and learning from his experienced colleagues. Owen is one of five apprentices working with Lovell and is the only young person working in plastering.

Speaking after the visit, Russell Brown MP said: “Unemployment is the major issue facing local young people and apprenticeships are one of the best ways to tackle the scourge of joblessness.  It gives our local young people a skill set that they have for life.  Having spent time with an apprentice like Owen, I know what a great opportunity this is for him.

“There is the opportunity to learn on the job, build up knowledge and skills, gain qualifications and earn money all at the same time. They also gain excellent prospects for the future because they have the knowledge and experience that employers really value. But apprenticeships are also good for the businesses themselves, helping them fill skills gaps. I hope others follow the lead of companies such as Lovell and offer apprenticeships.  We can get our young people working again.”

Director of Housing Services for DGHP, Jayne Moore said: “There are hundreds of young people across Dumfries and Galloway with great potential. Apprenticeships are not only good for young people, but they benefit business and have an impact on the wider community.

“It’s great that DGHP’s repairs and maintenance contract with Lovell can help young people like Owen benefit from skills and experience he will learn on the job from his apprenticeship.”

Allister Duff, Project Manager at Lovell said: “We’ve got a few young tradesmen coming through at the moment. One of our apprentice joiners is in his final year and the other three are in various stages of their joinery apprenticeships. For young people like Owen, an apprenticeship is the best of both worlds, combining training in college and on the job experience.”

Art & Craft in its Natural Environment as Gallery is Transformed into a Home

Art & Craft in its Natural Environment as Gallery is Transformed into a Home

From ceramics to wallpaper – Spring Fling shows how you can furnish and decorate completely from Dumfries and Galloway

Parts of a Dumfries art gallery have been transformed so visitors can see how beautiful craft, design and visual art would look in their own homes.

The Spring Fling @ Home exhibition, which opens at the Gracefield Arts Centre on Saturday 15 March, shows how you can get a full range of high-quality furnishings and decorations which are all created in Dumfries and Galloway.

Lucianne Lassalle, a sculptor from the hamlet of Wallaceton, said: “Most work is made for a home not a gallery. This is a great chance to visualise what things will really look like in your own house.”

Lucianne is known for her highly dramatic sculptures, which include fabulous figures of wild creatures which are part human and part animal.

The exhibition also reflects how much work produced by the region’s designers and makers is intended to be used rather than just displayed.

Clare Dawdry, who makes functional stoneware and earthenware, said: “I’m really excited about this exhibition because it will put my work in context, rather than having it up on a white plinth.

“I make pots which I hope people will enjoy using in their own homes and which will enhance the experience of eating and cooking.”

Clare, based in Kirkpatrick Durham, was originally inspired by a friend in Australia. She said: “When I went round there I loved choosing the pots and plates we would eat from.

“It’s something I now want to offer other people – everything I make is home-made and hand thrown on the wheel. No piece is ever exactly the same, so people have something that is distinctively theirs to enjoy.”

Furniture maker Pete Brown, from Eskdalemuir, is also delighted to have his work exhibited in a home-style environment.

He said: “Everything I make is intended for the home, so it’s great that it’s going to be displayed in a more homely setting.”

Pete, who as well as making furniture is a member of the Moffat Mountain Rescue Team, has spent many years honing his skills – including a period helping with the restoration of a chateau in the south of France.

He specialises in hard woods and is known for the quality and durability of his designs.

“I pay close attention to detail, that’s something which is very important to me. And I also expect what I create to outlast me!”

Peter’s clients are from all over the world and can now be found in some very exclusive residences – one customer had a piece flown home by private jet.

Urpu Sellar, from Dundrennan, is a ceramicist whose work brings out the humour in the everyday. She said: “What’s lovely about this exhibition is that it’s a chance to see art and craft in its natural habitat – which is the home.”

The exhibition is produced by Spring Fling, the Dumfries and Galloway visual art and craft movement, which is currently promoting the region’s creative community through a series of regional and UK exhibitions.

Leah Black, Spring Fling Director, said: “There is so much creativity in Dumfries and Galloway that we wanted to show how you could furnish and decorate your home from high-quality work produced within the region.

“These days the range extends from wallpapers, textiles and pictures through to furniture and ceramics – the creativity of our region is quite amazing.

“And when people buy visual art or craft, it’s normally for the home, so we thought it would be really useful for people to get an idea of what something looks like in a domestic setting.”

SCOOP THAT POOP EVEN ON FARM LAND

DOG WALKERS URGED TO CLEAN UP FAECES ON FARMLAND

NFU Scotland is urging members of the public to clean up after their dogs when walking on agricultural land.

Parasites found in some dog faeces can result in the abortions of cattle and death in sheep and with several reports over recent months, local farmers are pleading with the public to be more responsible.

As we are now well and truly into lambing and calving season, the message to members of the public is to remember to pick up any faeces from dogs they are walking, including when they are using agricultural land.

There is evidence of the links between two specific diseases in livestock and the presence on grazing land of faeces from infected dogs, these are Neosporosis and Sarcocystosis.

Neosporosis can cause abortions in cattle and is thought to be responsible for the highest percentage of all cattle abortions reported in the UK. Neospora eggs are produced by infected dogs and excreted in their faeces. Cattle will then become infected if they eat food, ie grass, or drink water contaminated with the eggs.

The prevalence of the disease in herds, and its potential impact on farm economics – due to infected cows being more likely to abort, premature culling and reduced milk yields – make this an important disease to try to control.

Sarcocystosis is also caused by parasites, which can use dogs as intermediate hosts, and similarly the eggs are produced and excreted in faeces. Sheep will become infected if they eat food or drink contaminated by the eggs.

The presence of sarcocysts, parasites, on a carcass following slaughter can result in the carcass being condemned. The disease can be passed on from ewe to lamb during pregnancy.

In terms of both these diseases, faeces from infected dogs can contaminate pasture and animal feed, water or bedding. There is currently no licensed vaccine or drugs available for these diseases.

Animal Health and Welfare Policy Manager for NFU Scotland, Penny Johnston commented:

This is becoming an increasing problem for many farmers, especially when located on urban fringes and is an important issue for dog owners to be aware of, both for the health of their own pet but also the livestock grazing on that land.

“Those utilising any agricultural land to exercise their pets should do so responsibly and clean up after their animals to avoid the spread of disease.”

DGWGO FRIDAY FOCUS 14/3/14

This weeks DGWGO Friday Focus is on another local Community page , that vbery much like DGWGO Aims to get people interested and excited about this wonderful region , The page we are focusing on actually admits that to start with they used DGWGO as a bit of a Guide to get their page up and running , which we are very proud and flattered about indeed ! The Page we are focusing on Today is ‘Dalbeattie Matters’

Dalbeattie Matters website was launched about 8 or 9 years ago and was a joint initiative between Dalbeattie Initiative and Dalbeattie Community Council and Ann Atwell ran it herself for the first 4 years, before I volunteered to help her.

There is so much to see and do in and around Dalbeattie, and the wider area and it was built up to provide the people of Dalbeattie and surrounding area with a single point at their fingertips where they could access information, and we have sections listing all the local groups; as many of the businesses as we can, community council information, local events, links to other websites, etc.  It also used to be just mainly local news we put on, but over time, I’ve started putting on anything that catches my attention that I think will be of interest to the local community, or is something they need to know.  I always bear in mind that people who grew up in Dalbeattie and have moved away often access it for news of home, as do visitor who are coming to the area.

We had started the FB page around the beginning of December 2012 as we both felt we missing a lot of people by not using FB.  Neither of us were really into FB that much although we both had our own pages, and really didn’t do a great deal with it to start with.  It only came into its own round around the time of the snow in March last year, when we all needed to pull together to keep our communities as informed as possible about conditions on the roads,  and it has grown from there.  I only work part time at the moment, so can keep both up usually in the morning before I go to work, but when I was working full time it had to be fitted in around work.  Ann was there most of the time doing stuff as well but she gave up in December 2012.  Michelle McRobert from the Initiative Office took over from Ann, but she doesn’t have a lot of time and it is mainly me that looks after both sites.

There is so much to do and see in and around the Dalbeattie area and the website and, more particularly now, the FB page are a great way of letting people locally, and from further afield, know what is on offer.  Both mediums are great for visitors coming into the area, as they can see what is going on locally and in the wider area, look for places to stay and find places to eat.

D&G is a brilliant area to live in and it is really a ‘mini’ Scotland in one region as we have hills (although much more gentle that the Highlands), we have forests and we have miles and miles of beautiful coast.  Although it is a widespread rural area, there is such a lot going on all across the region, from our brilliant food producers, to our artists and craft makers, artisan bakers, attractions for people to visit and our spectacular scenery and it is good to have outlets like our website and FB page to publicise it all.

If you wish to get your Dalbeattie Events uploaded on the Dalbeattie Matters web site vist this link http://www.dalbeattiematters.co.uk/contact.asp and you can get them on the DGWGO events calendar by visiting us at www.dgwgo.com/events Together we can let the world know What Matters and Whats going on !!!!

I’ve drawn and painted for as long as I can remember. I do all sorts of subjects, but particularly love portraiture. There’s something about finally capturing the exact expression on a face that makes it look like your subject, look like they’re alive, or finally getting the last bit of colour in that brings the whole thing suddenly right, that feels magical – like the moment you learn to ride a bike or whistle! And when I’m commissioned to do a portrait, it’s wonderful to see the customer recognise a loved one (human or animal) in a painting or drawing which I’ve spent so many hours putting everything into. Once finished, it’s actually not easy to see my work go, I become so attached to it in the process!

Sometimes I work from several photographs in order to come up with exactly the right final picture, maybe including other items in the background or using one photo for facial expression and another for body position – in this way, it’s helpful for me to have a choice of photos. But if you know what you want and have a single photo, I can do that too!

Because the amount of work it takes me to do different subjects and the price of materials all vary so much, it isn’t practical to have a set price-list, but prices start from £45 for a single simple portrait pencil drawing. If you fancy commissioning something – portraits, illustrations, paintings or drawings of almost anything! – just get in touch and describe what you want and I’ll quote you a price, and you can then decide whether or not you want to go ahead!

I can be contacted via my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Katy.Ewing.Artwork or by email: [email protected]

I grew up in Dumfries and Galloway, in the small village of Johnstonebridge where my family moved from Argylle when I was four. I left to go to Art School in Aberdeen when I was 17, and stayed there for four years. Growing up, I couldn’t wait to leave for a city, and in some ways I did end up feeling at home in Aberdeenshire, but something always pulled me back to this region. The landscape I knew so well as a kid will always feel special; the gentle rolling green, the small woods and rivers of Annandale. But I’ve lived near Castle Douglas with my husband since 1996 and raised two daughters here, and this is truly home to me now. It’s been a fantastic place to raise children as well as to live – excellent schools, very friendly people and a town full of great independent shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. We have walks to beaches, lochs, woodlands, mountain bike trails (although I’m a bit of a fair weather biker which means I haven’t done that for a while ;)) all within a really short distance. And D&G is a fantastic and thriving area to experience art of all sorts, because communities of creative people thrive here and share their work!

HALF OF SCOTLAND’S FATAL HOUSE FIRES STARTED BY SMOKING MATERIALS – NO SMOKING DAY 2014

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has thrown its weight behind national No Smoking Day, with officers pointing out that half of Scotland’s fatal fires are started by smoking materials.

Last year accidental house fires saw 37 people lose their lives in Scotland, and with new research from the No Smoking Day 2014 campaign showing one in five UK adults smoke, the issue remains a serious concern for firefighters.

Assistant Chief Officer (ACO) Lewis Ramsay, the SFRS director of prevention and protection, said: “Quitting smoking means reducing you and your family’s chances of being injured or dying in a fire.

“We support No Smoking Day’s aim of helping smokers who want to quit by creating a supportive environment, but for those who do smoke, a few simple steps will reduce the risk of fire.

“A dropped cigarette end can smoulder for hours before becoming a fully developed fire. People need to make sure cigarettes are stubbed out properly.

“We have seen tragedies where someone has lost their life or suffered horrific injuries after falling asleep with a lit cigarette.

“People just shouldn’t smoke in bed and anyone who has been drinking or feels drowsy shouldn’t do so in a chair either – it’s far too easy to nod off and start a potentially devastating fire.

“Smoking and alcohol are a potentially deadly combination. By recognising the danger and choosing to stand up to have a cigarette, smokers who are under the influence can prevent fires and the deaths and injuries they cause.”

Scotland saw 350 accidental house fires caused by smoking and smoker’s materials last year. These were also the most common cause of the accidental fires where someone was killed.

The presence of working smoke alarms is known to be a crucial factor in people getting to safety when fire does strike a home, and SFRS is clear every property must be protected by these life-saving devices.

While all householders are urged to ensure their homes have a working smoke alarm on every level, people who do smoke in a bedroom should also have an alarm fitted there.

ACO Ramsay continued: “We need people to discuss fire safety with their families and make sure anyone who could be vulnerable gets the advice and support they need to stay safe in their homes.

“Everyone can take very simple steps to reduce the risk – our crews want to share the advice we know will prevent tragedies.  We want to hear from anyone who thinks they or someone they know is at risk from fire.

“You might know someone who lives alone, who smokes and drinks – if so then please get in touch with us today.

“Firefighters throughout Scotland offer free home fire safety visits seven days a week at a time that suits you. These have proven hugely popular but we want to reach everyone who could benefit.

“I sincerely hope No Smoking Day 2014 inspires many smokers to win their fight against cigarettes and quit smoking.

“Whether or not people manage to stop smoking however, it is vital that they join Scotland’s fight against fire and take the steps needed to prevent smoking materials starting potentially devastating fires.”

Anyone can arrange a free home fire safety visit by calling the freephone number 0800 0731 999 or texting ‘fire’ to 61611.

More than 56,000 of the visits were carried out last year as people across Scotland welcomed their local crews to provide expert advice and welcome reassurance.

Among the simple steps smokers can take to prevent fires is to keep matches, lighters and cigarettes out of the reach of children. Helpful tips on safe practices for smokers and can be found in the SFRS ‘Smoking & Alcohol’ leaflet (http://www.firescotland.gov.uk/media/332088/smoking___alcohol.pdf).
