Guest Blog – Martina McKinnel

The photo shows myself and the lucky winners of our Facebook competition, Ashley Flannigan and Sean Gilchrist, who recently enjoyed a relaxing break away at Palmallet Cottage.

Hello, I am Martina McKinnel and I live with my husband Roy in one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of Dumfries and Galloway, on the coast near Whithorn. We were both born and bred in Dumfries and Galloway and because we are from different areas we know our region very well indeed. We love living in Dumfries and Galloway and now that we have a baby due in July we can’t think of anywhere else we would rather bring up our children. The region is packed full of interesting places to visit, amazing people and beautiful countryside. It really is a pleasure to live here and it is easy to see why it attracts so many visitors each year.

Last year we set up Palmallet Holiday Cottage and we just knew that if we could get people to come and stay that they would love the area as much as we do. We have simply been overwhelmed by the popularity of our cottage which proves that we are right about how wonderful our region is – Tourists just can’t get enough of our area!

As well as our holiday cottage both Roy and I enjoy investing in property. I have always been interested in property, I studied Interior Architecture at university and after qualifying returned to Dumfries and Galloway where I have worked as an Architectural Technician ever since. Last year we completed our first project together when we fully refurbished a flat in Dumfries. It was one of the most satisfying things that both of us have achieved and we have since rented out the property to a very happy tenant!

As Landlords we really pride ourselves in doing things properly and we think it is essential to provide good quality accommodation to our tenants. It is very important to be in full control of every aspect of letting out property and because of this we manage and let all of our properties ourselves. We advertise, interview and select tenants, source our own team of tradesmen and deal with tenant issues. We think the most important part of being a Landlord is to treat all tenants how we would like to be treated ourselves.

As we regularly advertise our holiday accommodation and properties ‘To Let’ we decided to design and launch a brand new local website with the help of web designer Nathon Jones. The aim of ‘Dumfries and Galloway Homes and Holidays’ is to provide good value advertising space to Holiday Accommodation Providers and Landlords plus web links to visitor attractions in the region. Alongside the website we also set up www.facebook.com/dghomesandholidays where people can interact and post photos and comments on the properties featured on our website. Still in its early days, we now advertise around 25 other Guest Houses and Self Catering Accommodation from across the region. Our website regularly attracts new clients and each one is benefiting from increased bookings throughout the year. Advertising online is without a doubt the most effective way to let property! This year we will be developing our HOMES section and we hope that Landlords, both private and agencies, will come on board to take advantage of our online advertising space for property lets.

We believe in ‘keeping local business Local’ and our website does just this – it is a website and Facebook page for everyone in Dumfries and Galloway to use and benefit from and one which will increase tourism in our region.

As someone who knew very little about creating a website or a Facebook page I am delighted with the way things have turned out so far. And for anyone reading this, who is thinking about setting up a website, be prepared for a challenge as it requires a lot of commitment and motivation. But, it is very rewarding as there is nothing more satisfying than watching your idea coming together and proving to be a success!

Alison is an amateur photographer who lives and works in the far West of the region on the Rhins peninsular.

She is inspired by the stunning coastal landscapes and the open expanses of ocean that are hidden away in the beautiful Rhins of Galloway.

The many harbours, bays, beaches, wildlife and sunsets means that she has become addicted to photographing and attempting to capture the natural beauty of the area.

Alison has been a regular visitor to the area for many years and this prompted her to move and make her permanent home in the North Rhins over two and a half years ago.

She is passionate about the unspoilt landscape of the Rhins peninsular and the wider region of Dumfries and Galloway and hopes that her photographs help to convey this and encourage people to visit the area to experience its natural beauty for themselves.

Her images are captured using a Nikon D40 SLR camera and various lenses.

Hidden Galloway is the photography website for Sharon Halliday. It will showcase photography, thoughts and other artworks on occasion.

Based in Galloway again after a 12 years stint in Glasgow it’s very much a back to her roots period in her life. She was born and raised in Galloway on a beef and sheep farm near Crocketford, all sides of her family having been farming in Galloway for hundreds of years.

The theme of belonging to the land and part of the land is strong and Sharon tries to explore this with her photography, looking at what captivates us about a place and what roots us to that place. The beauty, the familiarity or the practicality of the land shown in the ‘shadows of the past’ uses belied by every contour.

She aims to reveal ‘views less seen’ and to try and capture the particular spell it holds over her and all those others who come here.

Much of her photography features places, and subjects that are off the tourist route and typically hidden from view. The name ‘Hidden Galloway’ comes in part from this, and for those that know her it is also a play on the naming of a long standing and ongoing community web project she started in 2001; Hidden Glasgow, where the aim has been to uncover the hidden side of the city though, photography, maps, historical research and story telling. The spirit of this is carried through into Hidden Galloway where the HG motto to “Always look twice” will continue to be embraced.

The image galleries and blog will be updated regularly. To be kept in the loop follow Hidden Galloway on Facebook, Twitter or Flickr. Or join the mailing list , where the updates won’t be frequent, but will see something nice landing in your inbox on occasion.

Guest Blog – Kathleen Cronie

Hello everyone! My name is Kathleen Cronie and I am the founder member of Mostly Ghostly Investigations, Dumfries & Galloway’s first paranormal team and creators of the Dumfries Ghost Walk and Haunted Theatre Tour.

As our name suggests, Mostly Ghostly are primarily interested in all things ghost, spirit and entity related, however we welcome reports of UFO sightings, weird and wonderful creatures and any other intriguing aspects of the supernatural that people wish to share with us.

So, what does Dumfries & Galloway mean to me and the team?  Well, where to start!  We are truly blessed to call this stunningly beautiful region our home, a region that can boast a wealth of amazing natural features, vibrant communities, talented, inspirational people and of course, a plethora of ghosts, hauntings and eerie historic buildings to explore!  We feel passionate about highlighting this area as a must-visit location on any tourist’s agenda and have worked hard to promote Dumfries town centre through our haunted tour endeavours.  One of our proudest moments was having this work recognised when we achieved the title of Tourism Champion in the 2012 Dumfries & Galloway Life People of the Year Awards.

You may be wondering at this stage how Mostly Ghostly came about; ever since I was a wee girl at primary school I’ve been fascinated with ghostly happenings, I even had a club called Spirit World.  Fast forward to 2007 and I turned my childhood dream of creating a paranormal group into reality.

Our project began with a ghost story appeal to the local newspapers.  In addition to the famous tales already in existence, we were keen to discover new, unpublished accounts of what people were experiencing in their everyday lives at work, home, school and out on the road.  We spent a year researching and preparing for our official launch, which included attending a 20 week course at Glasgow University, sourcing valuable contacts, learning about equipment and finding a first class location in which to conduct our maiden investigation…

On 31st October 2008, we officially launched at Scotland’s oldest working Theatre, the Theatre Royal in Dumfries,  Since then, we have investigated many diverse and exciting locations including; Greenlaw Mansion in Castle Douglas, Amisfield House and Tower, Brougham Hall in Penrith, Carnsalloch House near Kirkton, Lochmaben Castle, Dumfries High School and the nerve-shredding Pittenweem Clock Tower.  Following an incredible couple of years developing and launching two groundbreaking tours for our town, the Dumfries Ghost Walk and Haunted Theatre Tour, we’ve been busy promoting these ventures as well as focusing on our first love – paranormal investigations.  Collecting evidence of paranormal activity and all that goes with it has always been a key priority and we are delighted to be compiling a series of thrilling new challenges for the year ahead including a unique new ghost tour set to kick off in October – watch this space!

We are keen to keep the public informed through talks, the media and of course, our website, which is updated regularly with a variety of features covering everything from paranormal investigations to bizarre encounters with ‘shadow people’, personal experiences and website news to eerie tours and events.  I am now in my fifth year writing for award winning magazine, Dumfries and Galloway Life, and one of my many highlights during that time was when I wrote a feature on 50 of the region’s most haunted locations to celebrate the magazine’s 50th issue.  Another more recent milestone was a special feature marking Mostly Ghostly’s 50th DGLife appearance.

In a relatively short time, Mostly Ghostly has become an established name in Dumfries and Galloway and beyond. For any information on our investigations, tours or indeed, to share a ghostly tale of your own, we encourage you to contact the team!

Just Breathe O2 Launches Monthly Oxygen Concentrator Hire Service

The new service provides oxygen therapy in your own home.

Just Breathe O2, situated at Grierson House at The Crichton in Dumfries, has announced its latest service: oxygen concentrator hire.

This new offering aims to make oxygen therapy more accessible to those who need it, regardless of their location.

The concentrators provide supplemental oxygen therapy, which is highly effective at getting more oxygen into the body when the lungs have trouble absorbing enough on their own. Unlike hyperbaric oxygen treatment, which requires travel to a specialized facility, oxygen concentrators draw in air from the surrounding room and concentrate the oxygen, increasing the oxygen level from the 21% available in the air we breathe to somewhere in the high 90% via the concentrator.

Just Breathe O2 understands that many people are unable to travel for oxygen treatment due to being housebound or simply because of the distance or time it takes to travel to and from a hyperbaric chamber. This new hire service provides an alternative for those who need supplemental oxygen therapy.

Collection or delivery service available

Customers can choose from several units available for hire on a monthly basis. The units can be collected or sent to the individual, making it easy for those who need supplemental oxygen therapy to access it from the comfort of their own home.

Just Breathe O2 is committed to making oxygen therapy accessible to all who need it. Its new monthly hire service is just one way it is working to achieve this goal. With this new offering, Just Breathe O2 hopes to help more people breathe easier and improve their quality of life.

For more information on Just Breathe O2 and its hire service for oxygen concentrators, visit their website or Facebook Page

Just Breathe O2 is a community interest company, dedicated to bringing hyperbaric oxygen therapy to the Borderlands community, providing individuals with the opportunity to self manage the symptoms associated with long term and complex health concerns.

Guest Blog – Kath Lord-Green

Hello everyone, I’m Kath Lord-Green, and am currently based in Dalbeattie in the heart of what I consider is the most beautiful region in the world! (If only we had sunshine sometimes – we’d be spoiled).

Originally from Bolton in Lancashire, I’ve lived in the region now for over 35 years and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else! The stunning coastline, fantastic forests and beautiful beaches make it the perfect place to live and to visit!

My business “Insight training coaching and media” specialises in designing and delivering good value, motivational and tailored training for local businesses. I also provide one to one “life coaching” for clients and I am a member of the Association for Coaching UK.

You may recognise me (or at least my voice) from the “Friday Magazine Show” for “Alive Radio” in Dumfries from 12-4pm (107.3fm in Dumfries and on the “listen” button on aliveradio.net world-wide). Having trained at Salford University in media production and been the “News correspondent” on another local station it’s nice to keep my hand in for something I trained for and I do love radio. Interviewing local people, new bands, artists and businesses from the community makes it a great job! Especially because I like to know what’s going on in the region.

I have four children: my eldest son is married and lives in Perth Australia, my eldest daughter lives in Dumfries and is an English teacher , my youngest daughter is a beauty therapist and has just moved to Glasgow and my youngest son is 15 and at Dalbeattie High School.

Keeping fit is a passion of mine, I attend a circuits class in the community wing of Dalbeattie High School every Wednesday and I’m a member of Bannatynes gym in Dumfries, in addition to going jogging in Dalbeattie forest.

My little Westie dog “Charlie” also loves big long walks in Dalbeattie Forest which if you haven’t guessed happens to be one of my favourite places. The Loch in the centre is stunning and even a lot of locals don’t know it’s there! We also love Rockcliffe and Kippford too!

A love of football means I spend a lot of time watching it both on television and in person, my most recent game was a trip to the Emirates Stadium in London to see Arsenal. I also watch my son play every week; he currently plays for St Cuthbert s Wanderers under-15 team.

Travel writing is something I have recently started but I am finding to be an amazing job already. Getting to visit hotels and sample the accommodation and food in different locations and write about it is a real privilege and something I’m looking forward to developing more of in the future – it also makes the most of my new found joy of taking photographs (of everything and anything sometimes!)

I love living and working here! I love being part of this amazing community and I’m happy I am part of the DGWGO family.

As for the nights, well they are often spent in the Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park practising the skills required for dark sky photography, something which appears to be increasing in-line with the popularity of the park itself judging by the number of people enjoying the same activity!

RB’s First Ever Blog

Well folks, I’ve never written a blog post before, so I thought I better give it a wee go for the new DGWGO website. While I was thinking of a subject, I decided that the best thing for the first blog would be to tell you all ‘How, Why and What’ started this idea, that has now grown into the ‘DGWGO’ Family!

It all started back on May 13th, 2011. I had been an ‘Admin’ on a couple of other Facebook pages that had been shut down by their owner. So, I decided that night to have a go at starting my own. Little did I know back then it would really become so popular. It has become a page many folks have now taken to their heart and have great pleasure in using or commenting on.

me in the portpatrick lifeboat
me in the Portpatrick Lifeboat

For the first few months, it was a fairly quiet page. I posted everyday, but only a few posts and I really didn’t know what direction to take the page in! By 6 months there were well over 600 followers – I was listing events, local news and photos that I was taking all around D&G. Photography is a fairly new passion of mine and really something that has only developed because of DGWGO. This will be a future blog subject!

By year 1 the page had nearly 3000 users and was starting to be taken seriously by some events and businesses as somewhere to tell local folk about themselves.

Last year, the first large event to approach me was ‘The Wickerman Festival’; I had an amazing time helping to promote this as their ‘official/unofficial’ local promoter. I’m very proud that Jamie, the founder of The Wickerman, has asked DGWGO on board again this year – next time with a more official role!

It was at the festival that I met the team from Dumfries and Galloway Life Magazine and I must thank them for so much support they gave to DGWGO. They also gave me the chance to be their ‘Mr October’, enabling me to pen an article on their back page about what D&G means to me!

By 14 months, I started the ‘Twitter’ account (now has over 1100 followers) and ‘YouTube’ channel, which both add to the versatility of DGWGO and help encourage new members to join.

In November I commissioned a DGWGO logo design, provided by the amazing Hazel from Ice-Nine Graphic Studio. We ran a competition to have him named and he was christened ‘DUGAL the wee Beltie Bull’!

In December 2012, I decided (at this point I’d been approached by several music festivals – Comlongon Rocks, The Big Burns Supper, Thornhill Music Festival, Lockerbie Jazz Festival, other larger local events/businesses) that it was time to start a web page, so dgwgo.com was purchased.

In December, DGWGO was nominated for the ‘Dumfries and Galloway Life People of the Year Awards’. We didn’t win, but being nominated was an amazing result; it made me very proud, that a small moment of inspiration back all those months earlier, was appreciated by so many people!

In December too, I decided to take on a partner in DGWGO. Derek from Dumfries Design came on board, bringing with him his wealth of knowledge in web design and the IT business. These skills will help DGWGO to progress and grow into something you will hopefully all find useful, helpful and entertaining to use!

I had never met Derek before, but when I had my first meeting with him, his passion for my page and the work done so far, amazed me. His love for Dumfries and Galloway was equal to mine and he could see what I was trying to achieve. Hopefully together we will form a great team, to help bring D&G to the attention of many people out there, who know very little about this wonderful corner of Scotland!

In January 2013 we launched our first monthly newsletter, reaching nearly 600 folk, now growing monthly as we head towards DGWGO’s 2nd birthday. With over 8000 members on Facebook and 1250 on Twitter, a record weekly-reach of 148,200 people, DGWGO is becoming a really special community.

With the recent launch of dgwgo.com, we hope to make something very special and create a real buzz for this area! We at DGWGO thank you, the members and users of our pages, because without you, none of this would have ever happened.

Rules for Facebook Competitions

If you run competitions on Facebook, you need to do it the right way. There are countless businesses using their Facebook Page newsfeeds as a way of enticing people to like their business. On the face of it this might seem like a smart idea – get people to share your information and like your business in return for offering them a potential prize. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

And yet it’s not the way to do things – not according to the rules laid down by Facebook.

But it’s just the way people do it – am I really at risk?

This is the train of thought being followed by many businesses on Facebook. They see other people using newsfeeds for this same purpose, they like the idea and they start doing it as well. But it contravenes the rules as laid down by Facebook. The punishment for this can be as severe as having your Facebook page taken away – along with all the visibility and fans you’ve worked so hard to build up.

The bottom line

Here’s the deal. To do things properly you should host any competition you come up with on your business website. Facebook is a tool to help promote it, not host it.

Put simply, this means you can’t use your Wall or any other page or feature offered by Facebook to run a competition or promotional event. Furthermore, you can’t tell people they have to use one or more parts of Facebook to enter your competition.

For example, if you’re asking someone to like your page in order to be entered into a draw, you’re breaking Facebook’s rules. If you’re asking them to provide a comment so they can enter, you’re breaking Facebook’s rules. If you’re asking them to participate, perform an action or do anything of any kind on Facebook, you’re breaking the rules.

The key is to host your competition on your own business website. You can direct people from Facebook to your own site, but you can’t ask them to perform any actions while on Facebook. It’s up to them whether they want to like your page because of the competition information they’ve been led to (on your site).

Using the right tools

Facebook does have some useful tools and third party apps that can help you run your promotion however. ‘Pin a Post’ is particularly useful. It allows you to pin your post giving information on your site’s competition on top of your Facebook timeline for a week.

Elsewhere you could use an app, such as Shortstack for example, to help you run the promotion without flouting the guidelines. Whatever you do, be sure you have a proper Facebook release to indicate the site is not involved in your promotion or competition.

When you do it the right way, you can run a competition without breaking any of Facebook’s rules. But if you do it the wrong way, you can end up in deep trouble.

Guest Blog – Gina Lillycrop

I moved to Dumfries and Galloway for the love of a good man,

A man I married two and a half years ago after meeting him on ‘Muddy Matches’, a rural dating website.

I had been asking people for a long as I could remember, ‘How do you know when you’ve met the right person’?  I always got the same reply ‘You just know’. After just 3 dates with Mark I knew what they were talking about! 8 weeks later Mark proposed and in another 10 months we were married

I came from a background of Nursery Nursing, Hotel entertainment and Singing (With Scotlands Meat Loaf tribute band, Peat Loaf. People from Kirkcudbright and Twynholm might remember) before retraining to become a soft furnishing designer. So, a life of high heels, costumes, makeup and interior fashion. The closest I got to agriculture was gardening and feeding the grass clippings to the cows across the road.

Now I’m a Farmer’s wife, living in overalls and wellies, caring for animals and tending a vegetable patch. (The closest I come to singing these days is being a vocal coach to the incredibly talented 15 yr old singer/songwriter Zoe Bestel)

For 3 months of the year I drive a Massey 6499 (big tractor). Hauling cereal from the combine to the farm. For the other 9 months I’m still a soft furnishing designer.

Relocating my business from just outside a town with a large population, to a large rural area with a sparse population meant building it up would be difficult, especially when Dumfries and Galloway appears to hold the largest amount of self sufficient people per capita, but also the rural generations have a much better grasp of handing down skills to the younger generation.

Children’s Belted Galloway Rug
Gina Lillycrop Designs

So I had to re think… Combining my love of children, design and the inspiration of the world renowned Belted Galloway, My children’s Belted Galloway rug was born. This was the catalyst for many other animal rugs.

In between farming and soft furnishings I also organise the Dumfries and Galloway Mumpreneur Network group. A wonderfully supportive group of Mums, who have their own businesses and who share their business knowledge, and join forces with each other to generate yet more business.

So if home is where the heart is, then MY home is nestled among the rolling hills near Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway. Surrounded by fields, dry stone walls, trees, rivers and lochs, with warm and friendly neighbours. A place where scenic roads lead to picturesque villages. Where cars double park, and friends stop in the middle of the road to chat. Where every town you travel to in Dumfries and Galloway hosts a plethora of talented artists, authors, makers, musicians and cottage industries to name but a few, and between each town lies miles of unspoilt country side.

The community spirit is second to none. It doesn’t matter how big or small the villages and towns are, they pull together to create fantastic book and, music festivals, craft, art and food  fairs. The locally produced produce can be purchased on every corner, from Jams and home baking to locally grown meats, game and fish. I’m starting to sound like a Visit Scotland advert!. To me Dumfries and Galloway is THE GARDEN OF SCOTLAND
