Retired Teacher David McCullough Entertains The Lunch Time Guests At The Usual Place in Dumfries DGWGO went along to find out more about David and his Thursday afternoon performances.
Since re-opening in early summer, The Usual Place in Academy Street has, once again, become a very popular place to be for those looking to have a relaxing drink, a bite to eat, and a chat in the lovely church interior surroundings.
It is open Monday to Friday 9.30am till 4.00pm serving a nice menu of food and drink, from breakfasts to afternoon teas and everything in between.
To add to the already pleasant atmosphere, there is a regular soundtrack to accompany the lunchtime hours on Thursdays.
Retired teacher, David McCullough, voluntarily takes to the keys during 12pm and 2pm for a selection of piano tunes from the years gone by. His repertoire covers the classics spanning many decades and his presence is very much appreciated by the diners. Customers comment on how great it is to have the gentle live music creating a vibe of calmness as they enjoy their soup and / or traybake.
Operations Manager at The Usual Place, Dumfries told DGWGO “Yeah so on Thursday afternoons from twelve till 2 PM we’re very pleased to have an ex-school teacher David McCullough who plays in our main cafe area for the customers to add that little bit of extra atmosphere to as they sit there with their afternoon teas or the sandwiches or simply hot drinks. And it’s a very popular time of the week and people specifically, come to see us on Thursday afternoons because they know that David is playing in the main hall. He plays Abba tunes, popular music.
He’ll play the theme tune to Laurel & Hardy on occasion which people seem to enjoy. He has a nice repertoire that he goes through and they’re all quite laid back tunes. Nothing too lively and just to add to the atmosphere so people seem to really enjoy it.”
