Dumfries Gets Set for 2024 Nithraid

Nithraid, the annual celebration of the River Nith on 24th August, has announced the creative family friendly activities that will take place on Mill Green.

Keeping at its heart the spectacular fun of the river race, the Rite of the Salty Coo and its festive atmosphere, the Mill Green has been refocused to bring audiences an array of free creative activities and events with an environmental focus.

Each race boat will carry a community made environmental flag which on arrival will be taken to be flown from the pedestrian bridge. Audience members can design their own flag at the popular flag design drop in run by EcoArt. Other participatory activities include making paper boats and learning about natural inks, seed sharing and plant identification and making ships nails with the skiff building crew.

The Moving Images solar powered Cinema Caravan will be screening a variety of short animations and you can have your portrait taken using the first photographic process, tin type photography. The Crichton Carbon Centre will demonstrate their Flux Tower and representatives from The Southern Ayrshire & Galloway Biosphere and the SWSEIC will be guiding walks and opening moth traps.

Performance Artist Graham Bell Tornado will be arriving by Viking boat and sound artist Helmut Lemke will be performing his unique sound poems. There’ll be environmentally themed artist films at the Burns Centre, a free evening screening of the Riverwoods film at the RBC and much more.
