Autumn might be approaching but Dumfries Museum has lots of events to fill the longer evenings and provide fun indoor activities for families.
On Thursday 24th September, archaeologist John Pickin will deliver a talk as part of DigIt2015 and Archaeology Month. He will take us through the grisly history of the Dumfries and Galloway bog bodies, which have been discovered in bogs and peatlands throughout the region over a number of years, and discuss some of the mysteries surrounding them.
The following evening on Friday 25th September the Dumfries Burns Club hosts its Autumn lecture at Dumfries Museum, all are welcome. Dr Valentina Bold, Reader in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow’s Crichton Campus and Director of the Solway Centre for Environment and Culture, will discuss the life of the writer James Hogg. Known as the ‘Ettrick Shepherd’, he was mostly self-educated and had much in common with Robert Burns. There has been a recent resurgence of interest in the fascinating works of this man, which are written in both Scots and English, and his links with Dumfriesshire will be explored in this talk.
A merry night of music and singing will come to the museum on October 9th with performances by ‘Wellington Rebooted’, a talented group of local singers and musicians. The night will celebrate the Scottish connection to Waterloo with songs, music and readings from the Napoleonic era. Dumfries has many local connections to the battle of Waterloo and visitors can read more about this in the museum’s exhibition.

These include gallery trails, colouring sheets and a children’s shop-front. There will also be free drop-in workshops planned for the October holidays to keep youngsters entertained while schools are off.
Councillor McAughtrie said; “Dumfries Museum is offering a lively programme of events and activities for the start of the autumn and I am sure that there will be something to appeal to all ages and interests.’
