IF you have never been to Dumfries and Galloways most stunning and secret garden, ‘The Garden of Cosmic Speculation’ at Portrack House near Hollywood one and a half miles off A76, five miles north of Dumfries. Then Sunday the 30th of April 2017 is your chance.
the 30 Acre Portrack House Gardens contain forty major areas including gardens, bridges, landforms, sculptures, terraces, fences & architectural works. The Garden of Cosmic Speculation uses nature to celebrate nature, both intellectually and through the senses, including the sense of humour.
A water cascade of steps recounts the story of the universe; a terrace shows the distortion of space and time caused by a black hole; a “Quark Walk” takes the visitor on a journey to the smallest building blocks of matter and a series of landforms and lakes recall fractal geometry. Charles Jencks and his late wife, Maggie Keswick, conceived this unique garden in 1989 and it has been evolving ever since.
The Garden will be open for Scotland’s Gardens on Sunday 30 April 2017 from 11am-5pm. This is their only opening date for the year. Pre-sales tickets may be purchased HERE.
The entrance fee of £10.00 (concessions £5.00, children under 16 free) may also be paid at the gate. Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres receives 40% of the takings, the net remaining goes to Scotland’s Gardens Beneficiary Charities
HANDY INFORMATION FOR ON THE DAY
Parking
Parking is in the fields adjaced to the gardens and will be clearly signed from the A76. There is no charge for parking. Please wear sensible footwear as it can get very muddy in the car park and gardens. The garden opening is one of the most popular in the SG calendar, so please bear with us during busy times. We would like to make sure that everyone is parked safely.
Dogs
You may bring a dog to the garden. It must be kept on a lead at all times and any dog mess must be cleaned up by the owner.
Catering
Teas, coffees, scones and cakes available, no hot food.
Entertainment
The Upper Nithsdale Pipe Band will perform at 1.30pm and 3pm near the teas, weather permitting.

Disabled Access
There is limited disabled access through some paths, but others may be too sleep or slippery. There are no disabled toilets.
