Stories of Stone Bagpipes Revealed

The Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust is giving people a chance to discover the stories of bagpipers carved in stone from medieval to modern times in a free talk at Ellisland Farm on Thursday 28th March at 7pm.  Tom Hughes, a keen bagpipe historian and part of the Dumfries Stonecarving Project will give an illustrated presentation exploring the many sculptures of this ancient instrument.

The talk will explore some of the symbolism of the images, the various forms of the bagpipes through time, and a range of characters shown playing the instrument, from shepherds to devils.  The talk will also have a special focus on the recently identified stone carving of a piping pig in Dumfries.

The talk will be held in the barn at Robert Burns’ Ellisland Farm, Auldgirth, DG2 0RP, and admission is free.

The Dumfries Stonecarving Project is run by the Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Holywood Trust.
