D&G Council Evaluate Legacy of Year of Young People

Council Evaluate Legacy YOYP

Dumfries and Galloway Council [28 March 2019] will consider a summary and evaluation of the Year of Young People 2018.

The Year of Young People celebrated and showcased the personalities, talents and achievements of young people in Dumfries and Galloway.

The report will also outline the year’s legacy plans to ensure that the year was a catalyst for ongoing work.

Councillor Elaine Murray, Council Leader, said: “The Year of Young People was a hugely exciting opportunity for our area to deliver an innovative and dynamic programme of events, activities and projects for our region’s young people to showcase themselves and our youth work. It was an outstanding success.”
Councillor Rob Davidson, Depute Leader, said: “The Year of Young People aimed to inspire Scotland through its young people, celebrating their achievements, valuing their contribution to communities and creating new opportunities for them. From our experience in Dumfries and Galloway, we can conclude that it’s aims were achieved.”

D&G Council hears 10,000 voices of young people

10,000 voices

Dumfries and Galloway Council [28.03.19] will consider a report on 10,000 Voices, the largest ever collation of the views of young people in Dumfries and Galloway.

Research for 10,000 Voices was conducted throughout the region during the Year of Young People 2018. Participants were aged 10 to 25 and the findings reflect the views of around 47% of young people, living, working or studying in the region. This means that it is the largest collection of the views of young people in any local authority area in Scotland.

The information gathered will be used to inform and shape a new 5-year strategic plan for young people’s services in the region.

The Council will also be updated on details of the newly elected Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council and how this can support the Council when it consults with or engages with young people.

Councillor Elaine Murray, Council Leader, said: “10,000 Voices is an outstanding piece of work and is an exemplar for the rest of Scotland. It will be invaluable in shaping appropriate regionwide services for young people over the next 5 years.”
Councillor Rob Davidson, Depute Leader, said: “I very much look forward to working with our young people’s democratically elected representatives to deliver the services that they identify as their priorities.”

Working with the Annan Regeneration Steering Group and the existing Annan Masterplan, the Annan Solutions Team will continue to support and advise ex Pinneys employees who are still unemployed, work to sustain and grow existing DG12 businesses, attract inward investment by encouraging new businesses and new economic opportunities into the DG12 area, breathe new life into Annan High Street by tackling empty shops and regenerate Annan by bringing derelict properties such as Albert Hall, Central Hotel and Erskine Church back into use.
Ultimately, the Local Solutions Team (LST) will be responsible for developing an Action Plan for Annan and the DG12 area which will have a suite of shovel ready projects to attract funding by the respective UK and Scottish Governments which is needed if Annan and the DG12 area is to fully recover from the loss of over 450 jobs at Pinneys.”

The Final of the Dumfries Rotary Club Primary Schools Speechmaking Competition took place on March the 19th 2019 at Saint Andrews Prmary School.

The Finalists, in order of appearance were Sophie McLean, Eilidh Martin, Joe Clark, Eve Young, George McGeoch, Maya Nassar, Caleb Irvine, Tess Harper and Freya Paterson.
Each young speech maker spoke for five minutes on the topic: “The Future of Our Planet”

These young people came at this subject from every angle…They didn’t miss a thing!
And the winners were:

⭐️ First Place went to George McGeoch who identified that the species destroying the planet is… Us! George covered the topic comprehensively and finished with an appeal for parents, teachers and Rotarians to help his age group to take action. He presented a graphic image of “The End” if we don’t…

⭐️ Runner Up was Maya Nassar who presented her speech from the year 3,000. Her words imagined a world that included air quality that would make breathing difficult if there are no trees left as well as the best holiday destination being Mars… 10 months away! She also warned that “Easy Rocket” have a tendency to lose luggage!

😂 Tess Harper won the “George Taylor” trophy for most humorous speech. Her funny anecdotes around technology and Artificial Intelligence particularly had the audience smiling whilst considering the warnings wrapped in the humour. Tess finished with a reminder that it is our job to look after our planet… She said “I’m In… Are you?”

Judges Colin Grant, Director of Education, Dumfries & Galloway Council. Willie Johnston , former BBC reporter and John Glover , Dumfries Rotary Club had a difficult job in deciding on winners and Colin Grant in his words prior to the prize giving said that such was the quality of the competitors, he hoped the Rotary Primary School Speechmaking Competition would be in the future of our planet.

The competition was organised by Eileen Robertson , Convenor of the Dumfries Rotary Club’s Youth Services Committee.

The evenings proceedings were M.C’d by Rotary Club member, Rab Smith and the prizes were presented by the club’s Vice President Tom Marchbank who also delivered the Vote of Thanks and final words that closed the event.

The three winners will be attending the Rotary Club of Dumfries’s lunch meeting this Friday to present their winning speeches to the membership.

Can You Find Eight People To Join You In The Fight Against Cancer?

FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

CANCER RESEARCH UK is encouraging family, friends and work colleagues in Dumfries & Galloway to get together and enter Relay For Life, a unique, team fundraising challenge.

Teams of between eight to 15 people, of all ages, levels of fitness and walks of life are asked to raise as much money as possible for life-saving cancer research.

Teams can raise vital funds through a wide range of activities from karaoke to quizzes, supermarket bag-packs to charity balls and donations from their family, friends and work colleagues. They are then invited to take part in an overnight Relay at Bladnoch Park, Wigtown on 6th July to celebrate their fundraising achievements.

Anne Barclay, volunteer Chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life in Dumfries & Galloway, said: “Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your family, friends and colleagues while raising money for a truly worthwhile cause.”

During the Relay itself, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys the carnival atmosphere. As the event continues non-stop through the night, team members not on the track rest, eat, or sleep in their tents which are set up close by.

As dusk falls the specially made Candle of Hope bags – decorated with touching messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones – are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track and glow long into the evening.

Anne continued: “One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives. Taking part in Relay For Life is about being part of a community united in the belief that it can make a difference. Cancer Research UK needs everyone in Dumfries & Galloway to act right now.
“We have made so much progress in the fight against this devastating disease, but it’s not just technology or knowledge that we need to win the battle to beat cancer– it’s funding.
“Today as many people survive cancer as die from cancer, but there’s much more work to do.”

Stewartry U18s Through To West Youth Bowl Final

Stewartry Under 18s

Like last Saturday’s Calcutta cup Scotland v England rugby match, the local derby match between Stewartry & Dumfries Under 18s  was a superb 12-12 draw between the old rivals.

Stewartry were however awarded the victory under SRU cup rules which state in event of a draw where tries, kicks and yellow/red cards are equal the away team are awarded the win.

Also like Saturday’s Calcutta cup match this was very much a game of two halves.

Dumfries started with a very clear hunger to win the game and a wind on their backs.  They were two tries and one kick up after 20 minutes as Stewartry tried and failed to run the ball down the middle of the park through the Dumfries forwards despite being told not to try this tactic.

Strong words at half time and a few positional changes started to make a difference.  Stewartry were very strong in the scrum and pushed Dumfries off the ball on a number of occasions.  Line outs were steady and Stewartry started to get on the forward foot with strong runs from Kerr, Dunbar, McGuire, Telfer and Budde.  A wee wobble midway through 2nd half saw Dumfries camped again on the Stewartry line but tremendous tackling by the whole Stewartry squad averted what would have been a killer punch by Dumfries.

The new back line of Gwynne, Spence and Forsyth worked really well and with Forsyth scoring a superb try under the posts which was converted by Lochie Spence with 10 minutes on the clock.

The blacks kept the pressure on and just as the clock went into injury time Fraser Forsyth weaved through to score in the corner and secure a draw which was enough for the away team to progress to the Scotland West Bowl Final.  Once again great tackling by the whole team and special mention to the boys from the west of Galloway (Dozer Dunbar and Frank Gwynne).

Man of the match was Stand Off Gwynne.

In summary though, Dumfries & Galloway Rugby was the winner with this superb showcase of a game being awarded to the lads fae Bonnie Gallowa.

Public Asked for Views 9pm Watershed For Junk Food Advertising

Junk Food Advertising
kids watching television in living room.

The UK government is consulting on proposals to introduce a 9pm watershed on TV and online adverts for food and drink that is high in fat, sugar or salt

A new public consultation asks people for their views on ways to reduce the number of adverts for foods high in fat, sugar and salt that children are exposed to.

The consultation sets out proposals to tighten advertising restrictions. The restrictions will limit children’s exposure across the media they engage with most, as part of efforts to tackle childhood obesity.

The restrictions being considered include a 9pm watershed ban on TV, online streaming sites and social media. The restrictions have been designed with a view to encourage industry to develop healthier alternatives.

Data shows children are spending many hours each week watching television and an increasing amount of time online.

In 2017, it is estimated that children were exposed to more than 700 million online adverts for foods high in fat, sugar or salt and almost 3.6 billion TV adverts.

Exposure levels on TV have fallen significantly since restrictions around children’s programmes were introduced 10 years ago, but there remains a significant amount of exposure.

Evidence suggests advertising can affect what and when children eat, both just after seeing an advert and in the longer term by shaping children’s food preferences from a young age. This has the potential to affect their likelihood to become or remain overweight as adults.

The proposals would target foods that contribute most to children’s intake of calories. The restrictions would not apply to everyday staples like butter, oil or meat.

As part of the consultation, the government will consider the impact that further advertising restrictions may have on business, particularly broadcasters.

Currently, one in 3 children are overweight or obese and the number of severely obese children is on the rise. The proposals are part of a series of measures that will support the NHS Long Term Plan and help to halve childhood obesity by 2030.

Steve Brine, Public Health Minister, said:

“It is not right that our children are so widely and easily exposed to adverts promoting foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Small amounts of excess calories every day over a long time causes obesity and all the associated health concerns. We are, however, clear: there is no one solution, so our world-leading plan is about joined-up action across a range of areas so we tackle childhood obesity from every possible angle.
The NHS is already preparing to treat more and more children for the serious effects of extreme obesity in the future – so we have a duty to address the underlying causes because we believe passionately in our NHS. This isn’t about banning everyday staples like butter and olive oil. It’s about reducing children’s exposure to those products that have little nutritional value but that are part of a wider climate that is driving childhood obesity.”

Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary of State, Jeremy Wright, said:

“We know that childhood obesity is one of the biggest health problems that our country faces. With children spending more time online it’s vital that we look at all options to help us take action and improve the health of the nation – whether through increasing participation in sport, promoting healthy living through our media or through advertising.
The UK already has some of the toughest advertising restrictions in the world, but it is only right that we consult on further action on TV and online advertising for products that are high in fat, salt or sugar as part of our approach to tackling childhood obesity.”
