Women's Cricket: Local players bound for South Africa World Cup
World Cup bound: Orla Montgomery and Niamh Muir Scotland selections for the U19 World Cup

It is an exciting time for local cricketers Orla Montgomery and Niamh Muir who are bound for a World Cup after the Scotland U19 Women’s Squad for the January tournament in South Africa was announced on Monday.

Both play for the Dumfries and Galloway Women’s team in the Scottish Women’s Premier League and  both were in the successful Scotland U19 side that qualified  convincingly for the ICC World Cup in the Netherlands in August. They have learnt and developed their cricket talents locally through Galloway, St Michael’s and Dumfries Cricket Clubs and Cricket Scotland’s pathway programmes.

The tournament is made up of 16 teams split into groups of four, and will be held between 7th January and 24th January next year. Scotland feature in a group alongside India, South Africa, and the UAE. The top three teams from each group will then progress to the Super Six round, which will consist of two groups of six.

The Scotland Womens U19 Head Coach, Peter Ross, said “It is a hugely exciting time ahead for this U19 Scotland Women squad as they prepare for the inaugural U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.”

“They will have the privilege of being the first Scottish female cricket team to ever participate in a World Cup. It was evident during their qualifying campaign that this is an extremely talented group who have the ability to deliver high quality performances.”

The squad will be training at La Manga in Spain before Christmas and then will fly out to South Africa in early January to play warm-up matches. Scotland will play UAE first on the 14th January in the group games followed by South Africa and then India. The latter two  teams in particular will be formidable opponents at this level but will provide “an amazing opportunity for our U19s Women to participate in the first-ever Women’s U19s World Cup”.

Pine Trees Offer More Than Just Joy For Christmas

Pine trees offer more than just joy for Christmas

A real Christmas tree is the centrepiece of many households’ festive decorations but apart from filling the room with a woody fragrance, pine needles have a key role to play in addressing challenges relating to energy.

Cellulosic pine needles (CPNs) are the largest source of renewable biomass produced worldwide. They can also be used in a range of bioproducts, especially for agri-food energy sectors.

However, a review by researchers at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), in partnership with scientists at Sri Sai University and Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu in India, found CPN waste is currently underutilised.

They said to maximise the environmental benefits of pine needles, it was necessary to scale up the range of processes for creating value-added products.

This includes gasification to turn CPNs into bioenergy; pyrolysis – the use of extreme heat – to create various carbon-based water purification materials; and saccharification combined with fermentation to produce bioethanol yields. In addition, nano cellulose extracted from CPNs can be used as packing materials.

Vijai Kumar Gupta, Senior Challenge Research Fellow at SRUC, said: “Cellulosic pine needles are substantially better than coal in terms of the economic benefits of bio-energy generation at different CO2 emission reductions.
“CPN wastes are underutilised, but they have remarkable potential to act as feedstock for generating bio-based products and bioenergy.”
Co-author Professor Vijay Thakur added: “To maximise the environmental benefits, it is critical to utilise the full valorisation potential of CPNs, developing various biobased product types for sustainable biorefineries and the circular economy concepts.”

The review was published by Bioresource Technology.

A Dumfries and Galloway College lecturer has been honoured with a special award at a prestigious ceremony celebrating the work colleges do across Scotland.

Susan McLellan, a lecturer in Health and Social Studies, was shortlisted in the College Development Network’s Learning and Teaching Colleague of the Year category.

And on Friday, November 25, at the glitzy ceremony at Radisson Blu, Glasgow, a beaming Susan took to the stage after her name was announced as the winner… in front of more than 280 guests who attended the biggest-ever Scottish College Awards, which heralds the talent, innovation and success by colleges, staff and students.

The ambition and excellence of the nominees was reflected in the record-breaking number of entries this year – 160 submissions from every part of the country – with the evening hosted by the BBC’s Amy Irons and guest speaker Jamie Hepburn, MSP, Minister for Higher Education and Further Education, Youth Employment and Training.

Susan, who has been at Dumfries and Galloway College since 2016, said:

“I felt incredibly proud to go on stage and receive the prize – it was really something very special indeed.
“To be recognised in this way is quite overwhelming, if I’m honest, but I would like to thank all of my colleagues and students at Dumfries and Galloway College for their support. Without them, the award would never have been possible.”

Dalbeattie’s Rocks and Wheels Project Moves Forward

Dalbeattie's Rocks and Wheels Project Moves Forward

The dedicated Rocks and Wheels team are ending the year in a positive place, ready to push forward with the design stage of the project in 2023.

The focus this year involved finalising the business plan to present to the D&G Council panel for the asset transfer request for the former Dalbeattie primary school site. Both parties have agreed the decision notice of the transfer, and this will be completed within 2 years or earlier if £2.5million has been secured. The project was selected as one of three in Dumfries and Galloway for the Levelling Up Fund. No news yet if the project has been successful but they are hopeful to find out the decision by the end of the year.

However, through funding they have successfully secured money from South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE) and Community Led Regeneration Fund (CLERF) for the project to progress to the ‘developed design’ stage (RIBA3), where the practical aspects of the concept are decided and discussions with the design team will begin considering the legal requirements such as building regulations and planning. The steering group are really excited to be working with Collective Architecture from Glasgow who will bring the ideas of Rocks and Wheels to life. From the continued community consultations held the team are ready to feed the community’s ‘needs and wants’ for the building to the architects to work their magic. The extensive work the steering group have undertaken so far provides them with a clear and substantial framework that has been commercially and economically tested. The team are confident Collective Architecture will further develop these ideas and identities of the proposed spaces and places which reflect our community. The financial support awarded by Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) has covered the operating expenses which has had a significant impact on getting the project to this stage of development.

Finally for 2022, Rocks and Wheels would like to introduce their first Honorary Patron Dame Barbara Kelly. One of the regions most inspiring and influential people. Dame Barbara has fond memories of growing up in Dalbeattie and attended both Dalbeattie primary and secondary schools.

We are delighted that Dame Barbara Kelly has accepted our invitation to become our first honorary patron. Dame Barbara has always been passionate about Dalbeattie and for her to support the Rocks and wheels project is wonderful, especially as we are utilising the old primary school where she attended as a girl” Ian Wilbur, Chair of Rocks and Wheels.

Other positives to end the year on include the publication of Rocks and Wheels quarterly online newsletter, awarded the bronze level Cycle Scotland award, holding a face to face 2-day community consultation where you could have a go at making a delicious smoothie while cycling and finalising Rocks and wheels first ever cycle challenge. This will take place Sunday 23 April 2023 and is open to absolutely anyone who wants to enjoy a wonderful day out riding through the beautiful Dumfries and Galloway countryside whether it is on an ebike, tricycle, tandem, mountain bike or road bike, the choice is yours. For more information about news, events and to register for the cycle challenge visit the website rocksandwheels.org

Dalbeattie Community Initiative would like to thank the continued support the project has received from D&G Abbey Ward Officer, Local Councillors, Dalbeattie Learning Campus & local schools/groups, and our community and hope to share continued positive progress in 2023.

Food Train Delivers Christmas Cheer To Oldest Customer Loreta, 102

Volunteers with older people’s charity are ensuring residents across Dumfries and Galloway have all the food they need for the festive season

A 102-year-old woman has said a special thank-you to volunteers ensuring she does not go without essential shopping supplies this Christmas.

Loreta Lockwood, of Dumfries, is the oldest member of Food Train, the charity that helps older people to eat well and live well in their own home.

The great-grandmother is among 650 people across the region who volunteer shoppers and delivery teams are ensuring are stocked up for the festive season.

Food Train’s team is pulling out all the stops to collect their Christmas grocery shopping – spreading a little cheer as they drop them off at their homes and enjoy a chat with them.

Mrs Lockwood, a former secretary who has lived in Dumfries for 20 years having lived in Gatehouse of Fleet for two decades before that, has had her shopping delivered by the charity for 12 years and is popular among the volunteers.

She said: “I’d like to thank the volunteers from Food Train. They’re really helpful because I struggle to get out – always so obliging. I couldn’t do without what they do and always look forward to speaking to them.

“I always appreciate it, but especially at this time of year when people are so busy.

“As well as getting my shopping, I’ve also had a befriender through Food Train in the past. Although she’s moved away, we still keep in-touch, which is nice. She even came to visit me on my birthday.

“If anyone is thinking about signing up to Food Train services, I’d say don’t hesitate – they are very good.”

Mrs Lockwood is planning a quiet Christmas at home, with one of her daughters travelling from Luxembourg to spend time with her. They will be joined by her brother, Father Ralph Mancini, who is also well-known in Dumfries through his work at St Andrew’s Church.

Isobel Henklemann, Regional Manager at Food Train, said: “Our volunteers love going in to see Loreta and having a chat with her. It’s lovely when people like her take a minute to say thanks for all that they do.

“Christmas can be a lonely time for some older people who struggle to get out of their homes, so it makes the chats to hand over shopping lists and visits from our volunteers even more important.

“Across the region, our teams are working really hard to ensure members have everything they need so that they can be comfortable and well-fed for the festive season. The work they do makes a significant positive difference to peoples’ lives.”

Meanwhile, older people, volunteers and staff enjoyed the first festive fundraising coffee morning to be held at the charity’s headquarters and community hub at English Street in Dumfries town centre.

The charity moved into the former Dumfries and Galloway Council building this summer, realising a 27-year dream to have a home of its own.

The coffee morning raised more than £200, as well as providing a great chance for older people, Food Train volunteers and staff members to get together for a Christmas chat.

Chief Inspector Stephen Bell, from Police Scotland, said

“Between 2021 and 2022 there were 7,858 assaults on emergency workers, an increase of 12% and unfortunately, on average results in 22 emergency workers being assaulted per day in Scotland.

We have so many young talented people across Dumfries and Galloway and this led to us providing the opportunity to all young people to help promote the Your Safety Matters message and the competition being launched.

There was an amazing response with 52 overall entries and 14 entrants being invited to the Your Safety Matters awards which was an opportunity to show case some the work of some real talented artists and actors. Older Wheatley Customers in Dumfries & Galloway To Receive Welfare Visits

Wheatley Homes South customers over the age of 70 will receive drop-in visits from their housing officer over the winter months

Customers of Wheatley Homes South, part of Wheatley Group – Scotland’s leading housing, care and property-management group – will be visited by their housing officer, who will check in on their welfare and provide advice and support on paying energy costs, rent or on food bills.

Around 2000 Wheatley customers over the age of 70 across Dumfries and Galloway will be visited as part of the new initiative. The welfare visits have already started and will carry on until March 2023.

It is one of a range of wraparound support services offered by Wheatley Group to help tenants, including emergency food supplies through EatWell as well as free expert welfare benefits and fuel advice.

Recently, Wheatley launched its ‘Here for You’ campaign, the group’s £6m cost-of-living crisis Scotland-wide campaign, which gives housing officers extra tools to support customers.

All vulnerable Wheatley customers will get a visit from their housing officer while every tenant will receive a letter outlining the different support available to them and urging them to get in touch if they are struggling.

Alan Glasgow, Managing Director of Wheatley Homes South, said: “We’re doing all we can to support our customers in these challenging times.

“We know that this time of year can be difficult for some people at the best of times, but in this cost-of-living crisis, it can be even harder.

“Over the coming weeks, our housing officers will be visiting older residents to check on their wellbeing, have a chat and find out what extra support they need at this time.

“We would encourage any customer who is struggling to get in touch with their housing officer, we are here to help.”

Local Technician Keiron Chisholm Qualified to Deliver Lighting for Events and Festivals Thanks to Support from Galloway Glens Scheme

Local technician Keiron Chisholm

Local technician Keiron Chisholm is now qualified to deliver lighting for events and festivals, thanks to support from the Galloway Glens Scheme, reducing the need and cost for this expertise to be sought from outside the region.

Keiron Chisholm is one of the Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities volunteers and has been heavily involved with the organisation’s sound and lighting at events. Keiron identified a course that allows him to provide signed-off event electrics for organisations such as the Festivities and many others in the wider area.

In order to have event electrics signed off by professionals who have been certified, organisations must normally get a company from Glasgow or Edinburgh to sign off. This can be very expensive, especially for charities and local organisations who are looking to put on community events. Keiron identified a need for this training in the local area, and with the support of Galloway Glens, Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities were able to support Keiron through this training.

Keiron will now work as a contractor for Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities, as well as continuing to volunteer his time and can also build a business in the local area, offering his services to other organisations and events.

Avive Asbridge from Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities said:

“The Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities are delighted to be able to support this talented young man in building a local business and grateful that due to this training, Keiron will be able to stay in the area and work with the Festivities in the future. Having an affordable way to sign off major events allows the budgets of these events to go further and allows the Festivities to keep putting on these valuable community events for all to enjoy. The Festivities are grateful to Galloway Glens for their continued support in a number of ways including training Keiron.”

McNabb Laurie, Galloway Glens Team Leader, added:

“One of the key aims of the Galloway Glens Scheme is to encourage young people to plan their working future here in Dumfries & Galloway. Our input into this training has supported that aim perfectly, while also reducing ongoing costs for our partners at Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities group. This nimble and targeted use of our funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund must surely be classed as a ‘win-win’.

We have some exciting plans afoot for further job training and intern opportunities in our remaining nine months, please keep an eye on our channels if you are looking for work experience right here in Galloway.”

The Galloway Glens is a 5-year suite of projects aimed at connecting people with their heritage, boosting the local economy and supporting sustainable, thriving communities. It is an initiative of Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Environment Team funded by a range of partners including the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Drax, the owner of the Galloway Hydro Scheme.
