Applications now open to join new partnership body to help influence direction of Regional Economy

Dumfries and Galloway Council and Scottish Borders Council are looking for representatives from across a range of sectors to apply to become a member of a new partnership body which will play key role in driving drive forward the regional economic agenda for the South of Scotland.

The group called the Regional Economic Partnership (REP) will form one of the two formal partnership bodies that will support the new South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), which will exist from 1 April.

The REP’s role will be to inform the development of, and oversee the delivery of the Regional Economic Strategy. It will also support SOSE to be integrated with public agencies and make sure there is a wide perspective from different sectors that play a role in economic development across the region.

Leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council, Councillor Elaine Murray said: “While we hope that SOSE will bring new momentum to economic development in the South of Scotland – it is essential that we harness the efforts of all partners and stakeholders to ensure that we deliver on a shared vision and strategy for the South of Scotland. Professor Russell Griggs OBE, Chair of SOSE added: “This is a new and extremely exciting era for the South of Scotland region. One of the key areas of focus is making sure that the new South of Scotland Enterprise reflects the perspective of all sectors that play a role in economic development across the region. The new REP will be fundamental in this in making sure the agency is fully embedded with the views, and needs of communities.”

The REP is looking to appoint a total of 12 external members. These are:

Sharks Quell Thunder in Title Push

Sharks Quell Thunder in Title Push

The Building Craftsmen Dumfries Solway Sharks welcomed Kilmarnock Thunder to Dumfries Ice Bowl on Sunday, in on of their last three game in the Scottish National League.  With closest rivals Murrayfield Racers close at their heels, Sharks sat top of the league, needing 3 points from their last 3 games to secure the title.

Coaches Martin Grubb and Jamie Thomson had their team primed and ready to play, and Sharks took to the ice with intent, and captain Struan Tonnar opening their account after only 2 minutes of play, from Marcus Murdoch.  Thunder worked hard to contain the Sharks, but Murdoch followed up with a goal of his own at 9:29 from Scott Henderson.  Tonnar added another just after 13 minutes, assists coming from Ewan Anderson and Peter Gapa. As the clock ran towards the end of the first a Kilmarnock penalty saw the Sharks take full advantage, Henderson netting from Mikey Thomson and Viktor Nestrasil at 18:27, followed up by another powerplay goal from Scott Crane assisted by Gordon Horne in the final minute. The first break saw the Sharks with a commanding 5 goal lead.

Sharks hit the ice hard on the second period, giving no respite to the under-fire Kilmarnock netminder Malcolm Anderson, and it was Gary Russell who struck first, scoring from Anderson after 29 seconds.  Henderson soon added another from Nestrasil and Liam Stenton, before netting his hattrick at the half way point, assists going to Murdoch and Nestrasil.  Horne weighed in next with assists coming from Crane and Ruairi Lockerbie.  In the last minute of the period Sharks again found themselves on the powerplay, and Ewan Anderson took advantage with an unassisted goal – bringing the score at the end of the second to 10-0.

With Thunder pinned in their own zone at the start of the third Nestrasil made his mark, scoring not just his first goal in a Sharks shirt but three in a row – netting a hattrick in just under 2 minutes, the first unassisted, and then aided by Murdoch and Henderson.  Thunder changed netminder, Thomas Mangan taking over from beleaguered Anderson.  He was soon under fire, Stenton adding to the Sharks tally next from Crane. 16-year-old newbie Scott Rae was next with his first senior goal, Stenton assisting.  Anderson added a couple more at the halfway point of the period, helpers coming from Russell and Gapa, before Murdoch added another from Henderson.  With Thunder reeling Nestrasil added another for good measure at 52:52 from Murdoch and Henderson, before Lockerbie scored what would be the final goal of the game at 52:52, Crane and Horne assisting.   The final buzzer sounded on dominant Sharks performance, and the score sat at 20 gaols to 0.

Gary Russell, with a goal and 2 assists to his credit, was man of the match for Sharks, while Thunder stopper Anderson was their man of the match, having turned away 57 shots in his time in nets.

Afterwards Sharks coach Martin Grubb reflected, “With the league title within touching distance it was important to treat this game properly as Kilmarnock have had some good results of late.  We talked about moving the puck, rolling all four lines and entertaining the supporters and I think we did a good job with that.
We wanted to give everyone a chance to play in all situations and create competition for places as we approach the playoffs as we know we need everyone ready to play and it was good to see our young players playing at this level.  I thought they did well and we were all delighted to see Scott Rae score his first senior goal.  Overall we did our job and scored some nice goals and we now look forward to next weekend as we look to wrap up the SNL league.”

Needing a solitary point to take the Scottish League title Sharks are away to Aberdeen on Saturday, before facing third-placed Dundee Tigers at Dumfries Ice Bowl on Sunday at 5.30pm their last regular SNL game of the season.

Better Mobile Coverage for Rural areas In Dumfries and Galloway

Better Mobile Coverage for Rural areas In Dumfries and Galloway
copyright BT

Residents in New Luce, Wigtownshire, are the first in Scotland to benefit from a programme to provide 4G to areas with no mobile coverage from any operator.

The mast is one of up to 24 scheduled to be rolled out over the next two years, with further mast sites under consideration.

Vodafone is now providing 4G, 3G and 2G services from the new mast. EE is expected to do so later this year, and will provide service from a majority of sites in the programme.

The Scottish 4G Infill (S4GI) Programme is backed by £15 million of Scottish Government funding and £10 million from the European Regional Development Fund. It was set up in 2018 to address Scotland’s mobile ‘notspots’ – areas with no mobile coverage – and is being delivered by WHP Telecoms, managed by the Scottish Futures Trust.

Connectivity Minister Paul Wheelhouse said:
While telecommunications is a responsibility of UK ministers, improving mobile coverage is vital to achieving the Scottish Government’s ambition to make sure everyone in Scotland has access to high-speed, reliable coverage.
“People in New Luce are the first to benefit but we hope that, like Wigtownshire, many more remote and rural parts of Scotland and Scotland’s islands will soon enjoy improved, cost-effective connectivity as a result of the Scottish Government’s work with industry and other partners, and our investment in the £25 million S4GI Programme.”
WHP Telecoms Strategic Development director Martyn Cheyne said:
“This is a great achievement for all involved and another important moment in WHP Telecoms’ growth. Providing connectivity to mobile ‘notspots’ is transformational but challenging, it takes a truly collaborative approach to succeed. Thank you to the fantastic S4GI teams at WHP, Scottish Government and Scottish Futures Trust, to Vodafone, Cornerstone, Openreach, Scottish Power, the landowner and tenant farmer, and to the New Luce Community Trust who have all supported WHP in making this possible.”
Background:
Vodafone UK Chief Executive Officer Nick Jeffery said:
“More than a quarter of the UK population live in rural areas. We are investing heavily to extend the reach of our network to these communities such as those living in New Luce. No one should feel cut off from online services whether educational or recreational. This is why we pioneered network sharing and are keen to support this programme, as well as similar ones, in order to provide fast mobile services in remote locations while minimising the environmental impact.”
BT consumer division Chief Executive Officer Marc Allera said:
We’re pleased to be playing a leading part in this exciting initiative by the Scottish Government to help expand mobile coverage in rural Scotland. EE already has the largest 4G network in Scotland and this programme will allow our superfast 4G network to reach even more of the country. 4G is helping to transform Scottish communities, allowing consumers, businesses and the emergency services to connect in new ways.”

Managing Director Barry Lloyd commented, “We are extremely proud to have won this award.  Bobcat is an important part of our business and we have put a great deal of effort and resource into boosting their profile amongst our customer base, which has clearly delivered positive results.  All our sales specialists, particularly those for the construction sector, are focused on spreading the word about Bobcat, and our customers have been impressed with the quality and versatility their products offer.  We are looking forward to introducing even more customers to Bobcat during 2020 and building on our success.”
Paul Hyslop, Bobcat’s District Manager for UK North & Ireland, added, “Lloyd Ltd have impressed everyone at Bobcat with their commitment to our business and their focus on delivering excellent levels of service to support our Bobcat customers.  Having a partner with such wide-ranging operations is ideal for us as the Bobcat range is suitable for a huge variety of applications, so Lloyd Ltd’s sales teams, backed up by their Bobcat-trained technicians and parts advisors, offer an excellent route to market for us.  This is hopefully just the beginning of continued growth for both Bobcat and Lloyd Ltd.”
