Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 4500 Store and Breeding Sheep at their special annual sale on Saturday 24th August 2019.
With Brexit looming and the uncertainty of a no deal in most people’s minds trade for all classes of stock touched both the trend and the sceptics. 2410 Scotch Mule Ewes and Gimmers were well presented to a large ringside of bidders ensuring a firm trade throughout the entire sale. Gimmers were in great form having benefitted from the good summer weather. At the pre-sale show the judge, Mr John Linton, Sornfallow, found his champion pen consigned by Messrs McKie, Finniness which went on to sell for £162 to the judge. Reserve Champions were a pen from Mr R Graham, Coatston which sold for £146 to Messrs Morgan, Powys. Outwith the prizewinners gimmers topped at £164 for a pen from R Wallace & Co, Mains of Collin whose consignment of 283 averaged £137.39. Texel X Gimmers sold to £142 from Garrochtrie; Beltex sold to £150 from Mossnae and Millenium Blues sold to £145 from Waterside, Terregles. John Kerr, Midtown dispersed his breeding ewe flock with Scotch Mules selling to £118 and Texel crosses to £116.

With the largest show of 2141 store lambs forward for many years sellers were well rewarded for their efforts. An abundance of grass this year has led to many new buyers coming forward looking to source quality lambs. Topping the sale at £66 were a pen of Texel crosses from Garroch Estates followed at £65 for Texel crosses from Creeside
