ANNUAL CHRISTMAS SHOW AND SALE
Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Ltd on Tuesday 9th December 2020 held their Annual Christmas Show and Sale of Prime Lambs where some 3116 prime and cast sheep were forward.
The show was kindly sponsored by MacTaggart Bros with the judging was in the hands of Mr J Stark of M J Stark, Bluebell, Alton Farm, Milton of Campsie.
30 pens of three were presented in front of our judge who commented on the quality placed in front of him as a tremendous show of lambs. This year’s Champions were found in the first prize Beltex lambs which scaled 39.3kg from Messrs J L McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart. These sold to Mr J Mactaggart, Dunjop, Bridge of Dee for a phenomenal £230.
Reserve today was the first prize Texel lambs from Messrs Sturgess, Cullinaw, Castle Douglas. Brought out expertly by John and Sam Tait, these lambs scaled 44.7kg and fetched £185 to Mr B Mactaggart on behalf of Grierson Bros Butchers, Castle Douglas. “Out with the show, the whole sale of 2702 prime lambs sold to average 216.9 (SQQ 220.2) top price out with was £124 for an outstanding pen of 8 Beltex lambs from Gelston Castle Farms, Castle Douglas with the same home topping the pence per kilo at 297.3 for another pen. Heavy weights sold to £106 for Texels from Messrs Armstrong, Littleton, Gatehouse of Fleet.
Cast ewes were sharper with addition of another face ringside, these sold to £157 for Beltex ewes from Carse of Clary. Scotch Mules sold to £100 from Torrs and Blackface to £75 from High Barcaple.”
