NUMBERS UP AT ANNUAL SHOW OF SALE OF NATIVE & CONTINENTAL YEARLING & STORE CATTLE

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 1486 Native and Continental bred yearling and store cattle at their annual show and sale on Saturday 30th September. This was an increase of nearly 200 cattle sold compared with the previous year. Store cattle prices at recent sales throughout the country have experienced a downward trend as the past weather continues to impact on harvest especially in the main cattle feeding areas. However, Castle Douglas on Saturday certainly bucked the trend with average prices increasing on the year. As always at this centre a full complement of buyers were in attendance ensuring a fast selling trade from beginning to end.

At the pre-sale show the judge Mr Tommy Taylor, Heathery Hall, Lanark awarded the Champion ticket to an outstanding red Limousin bullock from W McClelland and Sons, Knockshinnoch, Shawhead. Scaling 510kgs it was knocked down to the judge at £1420.

249 Native bred cattle sold well to a top price of £1320 for Herefords from Trolane and to 234.8p per kilo for Aberdeen Angus crosses from D & M Grierson, Shambellie Grange, New Abbey. Native heifers topped at £1050 for South Devon Crosses from Glenkiln Farms Shawhead and 208.3p per kilo from the same home.

1237 Continental bred cattle topped at £1420 and 278.4p for Limousins from Knockshinnoch whilst heifers topped at £1190 for Limousins off P & M Gray, Eastfield, Symington and 263.8p per kilo for a pen of Limousin crosses from M & G Barr, Meikle Kirkland, Crocketford.
