South West Scotland Dairy Show attracted a large crowd of people to see a great display of local dairy cattle and young handlers judged by David Wright from Berryholme Holsteins, Kendall.
Kicking off the evening and winning the junior young handlers was six year old Isla Davidson from Halmyre Farm, Haugh of Urr, leading her Ayrshire calf Halmyre Urr Scorpio 9. Isla won this class last year and also won the junior handlers at Stewartry Show this year.
Standing top of the link in the senior handlers was Katlyn McCormick from Dumfries leading Ceeingred Jordy Atlee. Katlyn also won this class last year and has previously won champion handler twice at Dumfries, Moffat and Stewartry Shows.
In the calf championship Hattie Hassall led the Yates family’s Holstein calf Logan Latenite Shania Red to take championship honours. Sired by Avant Garde-I Latenite, her dam is Milksource Shania Red EX92-2E. This December 2021 born calf stood second place in the December and January class at the Scottish Calf Show, as well as first place junior Red and White class. She then went on to be third in the junior Red and White at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show at Peterborough.
Reserve champion was Tom Baynes leading his own Ayrshire calf Parkhead Brenda, she had stood first out of 14 junior calves. This February 2022-born Cuthill Towers Bandit daughter was bred by Kev Tinker.
Winning the first of the breed championships was Philippa MacTaggart leading a third calved Ayrshire cow from WP Callander, Crofthead Farm, Crocketford. Fresh in July and giving 33kg a day, this Rockstar daughter stood reserve champion at the show last year.
Reserve champion Ayrshire, all the way from Northumberland was regular supporter Richard Baynes with his heifer in milk, Marleycote Sea Lily 32, owned in partnership with Adam Smith. Sired by Troutbeck Skyfall and backed by six generations of Very Good or Excellent dams, she stood honourable mention at the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show 2021 and was first place in-calf heifer at the Great Yorkshire Show 2022. She is maternal sister to Royal Flush Sea King available from Cattle Services (Ayr).
Claiming the Jersey championship on her debut show outing was Logan Chrome Caribbean from the Yates family and Gary Jones. This heifer in milk by River Valley Cece Chrome is out of Arethusa Veronica Comet EX95 and her granddam is Queen of the Jersey breed, Huronia Centurion Veronica 20J EX97.
Taking reserve spot in the Jersey championship was Douglas Buchanan leading his family’s Tintoview Tequila Blondie EX94. This fifth lactation Tower Vue Tequilla daughter calved in July and is giving 32 litres a day. She was champion Jersey at the SWS Dairy Show 2021 and reserve champion at AgriScot 2019.
Brian and Craig Davidson cleaned up in the Holstein championship taking both champion and reserve titles with daughters of their home bred bull Errolston Gauntlet. Their champion was winner of the senior Holstein cow class, Errolston Gauntlet I Ricki. She is the 11th generation Very Good or Excellent, fresh at the end of July and giving 53kg a day, she was on her first show outing.
Reserve Holstein champion was Errolston Gauntlet Destina, a second lactation cow that calved in August and is giving 51kg a day. She stood first place second calver at Moffat Show.
South West Scotland Dairy Show Chairman Tony Scott and secretary Katie Davidson presented a cheque for £496.30, the proceeds of the previous two show’s raffle, to Laurie Irving from Nith Inshore Rescue.
