South West Scotland Dairy Show held at Wallets Mart, Castle Douglas, on Wednesday 23rd October was a great success with a packed ringside of spectators to view a tremendous display of dairy cattle, with entries travelling from as far afield as Ballantrae, Hexham and Penrith.
The evening kicked off with a strong class of junior young handlers with Sophie Brown, Haugh of Urr, winning for the second year running, this year leading Logan Jones Alpha Apple Tart.
Securing the red ribbon in the senior handling class was Kacie McCormick. This was her third win at the South West Scotland Dairy Show, she has also had previous wins at Stewartry and Moffat Shows.
Lucy Roan led Colvend Salah Emma 2 to take the calf championship. Sired by Colvend Salah, she was born in February 2024 and out of Colvend Rubels Emma Red 6 GP80, who was sold as a fresh heifer.
Following her all the way from second in the class, to reserve champion was first time exhibitor, Kane Ogden leading his own Pearsgill Hano Blexy. A February-2024 born Siemers DJ Hano daughter out of Blexys Chief Blanche VG87.
Claiming the first milking championship of the evening in the Ayrshire section was Keith Davidson’s third calver, Carnell Barby Doll 8 EX91. Sired by Hilltown Oblique, she was purchased at the Carnell Dispersal as a heifer in milk.
Standing reserve champion and exhibitor bred champion was the winning heifer in milk, Halmyre Urr Ladybird 569 VG85, also from Keith Davidson. This fresh calved heifer is by Troutbeck Progress.
The Jackson family secured champion and reserve in the Jersey championship. Their champion was Guillyhill Video Daisy VG88. This St Lo Video daughter calved in July and is giving 35 litres a day. She was honourable mention at Dumfries Show, second and reserve Junior Champion at the Royal Highland Show as a heifer and part of the reserve team of four.
While, the reserve from the same home was the first place heifer in milk, a maternal sister to the champion, Guillyhill Webcam Daisy VG87. Sired by Unique Webcam and calved in May, she is giving 20 litres a day. She was interbreed champion heifer in milk at the Royal Highland Show, reserve interbreed heifer at the Great Yorkshire Show, reserve champion at Dumfries Show and first heifer in milk at UK Dairy Day.
Brian Yates led Logan Latenite Shania Red VG87, to take the Holstein and exhibitor bred championship. Calved in January, she stood first in the heifer in milk class before taking top honours. She is no stranger to the show ring having stood first Red & White heifer in milk at UK Dairy Expo 2024, first Red & White heifer in milk at Ayr Show, first Red & White heifer in milk and reserve champion at the Royal Highland Show, first heifer in milk at Dumfries Show, and most recently she was first senior heifer in milk and Holstein heifer champion at UK Dairy Expo.
Taking reserve spot was the senior cow in milk, Eedy Crushabull Acclaim EX93, also from B & M Yates. She calved her third in February, and has given 15,217 litres so far this lactation and produced 45,016 litres lifetime so far. She was champion Holstein at the Royal Highland Show and Royal Welsh Show 2023.
Winning the production cow class was the Jackson family with Clifton Chavez Denise, a fresh 6th calver giving 40 litres a day. She is the dam of the champion and reserve, and was also interbreed champion herself at Cumberland and Dumfries Show in her fourth lactation.
