Salmon Fishing Season Opening Ceremony Held On River Nith

Tuesday 25th February saw the start of the salmon fishing season on the River Nith for 2020.

This year’s opening ceremony was held by kind permission of His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch at the Drumlanrig Estate, Thornhill.  Despite recent inclement weather, the river had dropped in and a fine day ensued.

Proceedings got off to a start with Piper Sandy Dunlop welcoming guests to the event followed by speeches from Nith District Salmon Fishery Board River Director Jim Henderson, Drumlanrig Estate Manager Anna Fergusson and MSP Oliver Mundel.  Oliver offered a toast of malt whisky to the river and its fish, wishing all anglers a good season to come.

After formal proceedings, casting expert Glyn Freeman gave a demonstration of Spey casting then offered Oliver Mundel to the river bank where he was taught the finer points of fly fishing.  Some of the Nith Young Anglers were present and demonstrated their skills that they had acquired over recent years whilst on the “Fishing for the Future” project. The event was well attended by anglers, fishing beat owners, political representatives and those involved in fishery management.
