Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their annual show and sale of Scotch Mule Gimmers at Castle Douglas on Saturday 27th August 2016. Gimmers were shown in good bloom and the greatly improved lamb trade this year definitely had a positive impact on prices. At the pre-sale show judge, Mr Andy McLean, Kings Arms awarded the Championship tickets to an outstanding pen of Gimmers from George Allen, Bogside Cottage which later went on to sell for £194 per head to Messrs Linton, Sornfallow. The Reserve Champion pen came from Mr J Johnston, Lower Porterbelly and sold for £188 to J Jardine, Plant Hire, Dalbeattie. Trade from the first pen to the last pen never faltered and the average lifted by £15 per head overall to level at £143.13 for 2944 sold.
Also forward was the opening sale of 1318 store lambs which met an animated demand with all sellers going home totally satisfied. 763 Texel lambs topped at £68.50 Shennanton; £65 Barcloy; £64 Shennanton; £64 Barcloy; £62.50 Clonhie(Beltex); and £61 Lochurr to average £53.09. 476 Suffolk lambs sold to £68.50 Shennanton; £65.50 Barcloy; £65 Glentoo; £64 Shennanton and £61.50 Barcloy to average £58.81. 29 Mule lambs sold to £53 to Achie. 25 Cheviot lambs sold to £49 of Quarter and 25 Blackface lambs sold to £46 off the same home. Sale average was £55.
Top price in the sale was £210 paid to George Allen, Bogside Cottage for his show team of three gimmers which had won numerous shows up and down the country. They sold to J Jardine Plant Hire, Dalbeattie.
