This year saw one of the larger numbers of entries for a few years at the South West Scotland Dairy Show, held at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas on Thursday 19th October 2017. There were a total of 19 exhibitors turning out 57 dairy cattle from the Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire breeds.
Judge Willie Bryson from Dykehead Farm Lesmahagow had a hard task on his hands with the first calf class having 12 entries followed by a junior handling class of 16 with the youngest handler being only 2 years old but it was his big sister katlyn McCormick who took first place.
There were two Classes of animals that stood out the Jersey Heifer class which saw 6 exceptional heifers and the Holstein Senior cow class which saw 4 outstanding cows . Champion Holstein went to the Yates family of east Logan with Logan Sid Edie EX 94 the forth calver will have her next outing at Agri Scot on the 15th of November. The Yates family also won Holstein exhibitor bred and reserve champion jersey with Logan Oliver P.
Reserve Champion Holstein went to B & V Davidson Errolston with Bolivia Ricki EX92. The Jersey Champion and Exhibitor bred went to the Howie Family of Wellhouse Farm Stranraer with their second calved cow Wellhouse Joel Lady Carol this was the first outing for her in milk she calved on the 4th of august and on her last milk recording she was giving 28kg at 5.08% BF and 3.56% protein.
Ayrshire Champion went to the Callander Family from Crofthead this is the first time in over 30 years since the family showed at this show they won the class with second calver Brederode Stefania she calved on the 31st july giving at the moment 41kg.
Reserve Ayrshire went to stuart Gilliland Auchencairn with West Mossgiel Miss Modern 28 EX90 she sells at the Carlisle Ayrshire sale on the 25 October . Exhibiter bred Ayrshire Champion went to the Davidson Family Halmyre with Halmyre URR Joanna 3. Brown Swiss Champion Reverse and Exhibiter Bred all Went to the McColm Family High Borland Stranraer with Soulseat Jackpot Dee VG89 , their Soulseat Energie Cath VG88 was reserve she had stood 3rd at Dairy Day.
On the night the committee donated last year’s raffle money of £350 to Grant Hurcomb who in July sheared 2142 ewes for 50 consecutive hours. The show committee would like to thank all sponsors’ Exhibitors and all who attended the evening.
