New Buyers Create Demand At Wallets Marts – Sales Report

Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited sold 25 OTM Cattle, 205 Store Cattle and 108 Breeding Cattle at their fortnightly sale on Monday 8th May 2017.

OTM Cattle met their dearest trade of the season merely as a result of new buyers and a shortage of cattle for the demand.  Cows topped at 161p per kg or £1128.61 for a Simmental from Graplin Farms selling to C J Anderson, Nether Stenries.  Bulls topped at 116 per kg for a White Shorthorn from Ardwall Farms selling to the same buyer.  Overall average levelled at 137.19p or £812.19 per head included in which were a number of hill bred beef cows.

Store cattle were also once again in good demand and sold to a wide range of buyers.  Topping the trade at £1320 was a pen of Limousin bullocks from J Fisher & Son, Flathill, Dundrennan, whilst a pen of Aberdeen Angus heifers from T Robb, Trolane topped their section at £1245.  Top price per kg in the bullock section was 264.7p paid for a pen of Aberdeen Angus crosses from Glenkiln Farms, Shawhead.  A pen of Charolais heifers from J Mair & Son, Bargatton made 272.9p per kg.  Despite a poorer quality show the bullocks still averaged 232.8p per kg or £878 and the heifers averaged 226.4p or £830.

Also on this day the Company held their special May sale of Breeding Cattle.  Regular consignors, Messrs Hansell, Nether Barr once again topped the sale at £5000 for a homebred Limousin Bull.  Next up at £3500 was another Limousin, this time from D & R Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill.  Simmental topped at £3000 from Kirtleton House, Waterbeck.  Heifers with calves at foot met a strong demand with the stronger outfits looking best value for money.  Topping this section at £2300 was a Lim X heifer with a Limousin bull calf from Flathill, Dundrennan.  The Flathill consignment averaged £1935 for 15 outfits sold.  Jim White, Hightae made £2100 for his Limousin heifer and bull calf whilst 10 Limousin heifers with calves from Garmartin topped twice at £2050 and averaged £1875.  Bulling heifers sold to £1190 for Limousin crosses from J B Maqrshall, Auchenleck selling to R Kingan & Son, Blairshinnoch.  73 Bulling heifers averaged £983.56
