Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited held their main April sale of store and OTM cattle on Monday 23rd April 2018. With a massive entry of 1300 cattle this sale was not only the biggest seen here at Castle Douglas in recent times but also the largest spring entry in the South of Scotland. The ongoing inclement weather did nothing to bolster confidence but the recent rise in the prime trade linked to a large attendance of Aberdeenshire and English farmers ensured that all classes of cattle met a competitive and increased demand.
Topping the sale at £1370 were a pen of Limousin cross bullocks from G B Milroy, Mains of Machermore, Newton Stewart. Top price per kg in the bullock section was 295.9p paid to A McCornick & co, Barnbackle by Messrs Clarkson, Leyburn for a pen of Charolais crosses. Bullocks averaged 238.7p per kg – a rise of 9p on the last sale. In the heifer section a Simmental heifer from W & A McWhirter, Kenmure topped at £1170 whilst a pen of charolais crosses from W J Davidson, Poldeen were top price per kg at 281.7p. The heifer section averaged 230p per kg a rise of nearly 7p on the last sale.
A small show of OTM cattle met recent rates topping at £1294.38 for a British Blue cross from Trolane and 177p for a Limousin from Farhills, auchencairn. Bulls sold to 144p for a Luing from Wellhill.
