Wallets Marts Castle Douglas Limited on Monday 15 February sold 43 OTM Cattle, 511 Store Cattle and 378 Store Hoggs.
Clean cattle and cast cows met exceptionally strong demand.
Store Cattle were forward in much greater numbers than the corresponding sale last year. There was something for everybody selling to £1720 for a Charolais heifer from Messrs Armstrong, Farhills and 344.7ppk for Charolais bullocks from Messrs Davidson Poldean. Trade for stores was beyond sellers’ expectations with buyers from a wide distance in attendance.
Cows were a bouncing trade with averages bad to beat countrywide for the quality forward and we urge farmers to use the ring. Top today was £2146.20 for a Limousin Bull from Messrs Wilson, Kirkmabreck and 261ppk for a Saler cow again from Messrs Wilson, Kirkmabreck. Cows sold to a top of £2054.36 for an Angus cow from Messrs Craig, Compstonend.
A small, end of season show of Store hoggs topped at £89 for Scotch Mules from Ryan Ferguson Craigton Dairy House and for texels from Messrs Thomson, Nether Corsock.
