A new tennis facility has been created thanks to the Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund as part of Legacy 2014. Ruthwell Recreation Club put together a funding application to the Active Places Fund and the club were awarded £27,400. Funding was also provided through Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, the Dumfries and Galloway LEADER project and through years of fundraising by the club.
The new court is now available for the local communities of Ruthwell, Clarencefield and Ruthwell Station to use. The Active Places funding put in place through Legacy has and will lead to these communities becoming more active as a result of having a first class facility on their doorstep.
As well as this, part of the Legacy Plan was to improve Sustainability. The low maintenance and operating costs of the Tennis court as well as the multi-use nature of the court (5 a side football and netball as well as tennis) means that the sustainability of the facility is well on track.
Chairman of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Councillor Ronnie Ogilvie commented;
“It is great to see the court up and running. The Active Places and Area Committee funding has certainly been put to good use. The facility is being well used and maintained and I hope the local community continue to keep up the Legacy of the Games here in Annandale and Eskdale by continuing to take pride in their local facility.”
An official opening of the court is currently being planned by Ruthwell Recreation Club for later this year.
