On Saturday the 25th of February, the day before Scotland ran France very close in the six nations fixture, a slightly more one sided fixture was played at the Greenlaw.
A strong performance from the Stewartry RFC men’s 1st XV led to a convincing 71-5 win over visitors Cambuslang.
The away fixture had been closer but the Stewartry side still managed to score 60 points away from home so they hoped for a similar scoreline at home. The Stewartry side needed as solid performance to prove that the previous two losses were just a blip in an otherwise strong season.
The men from Castle Douglas are currently sitting second chasing promotion to the National Leagues. 11 tries were scored in an efficient and well managed performance. The first half started slowly with the black testing the opposition resolve before cutting loose and playing the exciting brand of rugby the home crowd has become accustomed to. Credit to Cambuslang who never gave up the fight and worked hard until the final whistle.
This week sees the Stewartry team travel to Linlithgow for a National Shield Quarter Final tie. Most of the current squad have never played the east of Scotland team who currently ait 3rd in their league and will prove to be a strong opposition particularly with home advantage.
