D&G Young Ambassadors Attend Sportscotland Conference 2015

Eight young people from Annandale and Eskdale along with officers from Active Schools and Community Sport attended a sportscotland Young Ambassador Conference at Hampden Park last Tuesday to gain ideas on how they can inspire other young people to get involved in sport or be more physically active.

Every secondary school in Scotland was given the opportunity to enrol two young people on the programme which is now in its fifth year. The key role of the Young Ambassador is to raise awareness of sporting opportunities in the school, community and local sports club and to promote an active lifestyle.

Two young people from Annan, Langholm, Lockerbie and Moffat Academy attended the conference at Hampden Park to discuss and plan for their role as a Young Ambassador and will look to their school PE Department and Active Schools and Community Sport for support during the coming year. The Young Ambassadors will have a role within their school and wider community as advocates and role models and act as leaders and reflect the views of other young people.
Chairman of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, Councillor Ronnie Ogilvie said “The Young Ambassadors Conference is a great opportunity for young people to network with other young ambassadors from across Scotland and share their experiences and ideas and plan their ambassador role with mentors. It is also a great opportunity and experience to spend time and be inspired by athletes who have competed at the highest level.”
Five of the eight Young Ambassadors who attended the conference and were also part of the successful Summer Leadership Academy Programme have been working towards their Saltire Awards which record and recognises volunteering by young people. They were joined by Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes who had earlier been speaking about their experiences in sport and were on hand to present them with their recent awards at the home of Scottish Football.
