Goals Galore at the Dumfries and Galloway Disability Sport Football Festival

On Tuesday 22 March over fifty footballing fanatics turned out at Palmerston Park , the home of Queen of the South Football Club for the annual Regional Disability Football Festival run by Dumfries and Galloway Disability Sport in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council and Queen of the South Football Club.

Senior and junior festivals were run side by side, with a morning session run by the Football Development Team offering a range of activities which allowed participants to hone their passing, dribbling and shooting skills.     Participants were given the chance to test their skills against some Queen of the South youth players who assisted the sessions along with representatives from Dumfries and Galloway Disability Sport and Stranraer Football Club Community Initiative.

The afternoon activities started with small sided games to allow for coaches to select players to represent the region at the Scottish Disability Sport National 5-a-side championships to be held in Glasgow on 20 April.   Participants were the given a tour Palmerston Park Stadium by the Queens’ Commercial Manager Jim Thomson, to gain an insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes at a football club.

The festival provided people from the across the region with a disability to enjoy some fun football activities while getting the feel of playing in a proper football stadium.   There was some great football on show and the game was played in good spirit by all.

Councillor Tom McAughtrie, who chairs the Council’s Community and Customer Services Committee said of the event;

“It is great to see people from across the region coming together to events such as this.  Football is a game that brings people together, and it seems everyone who attended the festival had a great time.  The Disability Sport team do a wonderful job coaching and developing the skills of people of all ages in a variation of sports.  I would like to record my thanks to all the coaches who help make days like these the success they are.   I look forward to finding out how the 5 a side team gets on in April at the Scottish tournament.”
